Gordon Lafer
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Gordon Lafer, Associate Professor, joined the LERC faculty in 1997. His work concentrates on strategic planning, strategic research, and labor and employment policy issues. From 2009 through 2010, Lafer served as Senior Labor Policy Advisor for the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Education and Labor.

Prior to his employment at LERC, Lafer worked as an organizer and strategic researcher for a number of labor unions, including the Building Trades Organizing Campaign in Las Vegas and Hotel Employees & Restaurant Employees (now UNITE HERE) at Yale University. 

Lafer’s teaching emphases include organizing, research, media, politics and strategic planning. He also teaches classes for undergraduate students on the politics of work and coordinates LERC’s internship program.

Lafer has published numerous articles in popular and scholarly journals on a range of labor and policy issues. His book, The Job Training Charade, examines the politics of job training policies as anti-poverty programs.

His recent policy work examines the democratic standards used for workplace elections under the National Labor Relations Board.

Lafer received his PhD in Political Science from Yale University in 1995.
