Call for Proposals

Interested in offering an innovative course to a small class of first-year students? Consider applying to teach a Freshman Seminar!

Freshman Seminars are intimate, interactive classes that allow first-year students to explore diverse topics while introducing them to critical thinking skills typically reserved for upper-level courses. Freshman Seminars place an emphasis on writing and communication, student-to-student interaction, and connections to campus and community resources.

Courses selected for Freshman Seminars come from a wide variety of disciplines, but they all share certain elements:

  • An emphasis on innovative instruction

  • Clear academic substance

  • Course content that sharpens written, spoken, and critical reasoning skills of students and includes a variety of academic readings

  • A teaching environment that promotes discussion, helps integrate students into the campus community, and is conducive to a mentoring relationship

If you would like to propose a Freshman Seminar, please review the Call for Proposals Fact Sheet. The sample documents below, specifically the Proposal Scoring Rubric, will assist you in developing your proposal.
