Marie & Arthur Berger Scholarship Fund

 

 

AWARD

Berger scholars receive academic year awards and a certificate.  The awards include:  4 one-year graduate/second Bachelor scholarships up to $2500 each (up to 2  of these may be awarded to incoming students); 5 one-year undergraduate scholarships at $1000 each.

PURPOSE

The fund was established in 1967 to provide scholarships to students of Landscape Architecture.  Its founding was specifically meant as an expression of regard for Professor Fred A. Cuthbert, who was Marie Berger's instructor at Oregon Agricultural College.

ELIGIBILITY

Students who will have completed a minimum of three terms in the professional curriculum prior to the academic year of the award, and students who have been accepted into the Masters program (MLA and BLA/MLA).  Students must be enrolled for a minimum of 9 credits each term of the award.  Recipients are eligible to apply in succeeding years.

CRITERIA

Graduate awards:  entering students will be judged on their promise to succeed in the program; continuing students will be judged on the basis of demonstrated excellence in chosen area of specialization (if appropriate), and overall contribution to the department.

 

Undergraduate awards:  performance in studios, other LA coursework; GPA.

 

All awards:  Special consideration is given to need.

Landscape Community Design Award

 

 

AWARD

This fund supports a cash award of up to $1,500 annually, as funding permits, to recognize outstanding service in community-based design projects by landscape architecture students.  The award may be divided among several students.

PURPOSE

The award will give public recognition and appreciation of students interests and accomplishments in community–service design projects.  It is made possible with a generous gift by Marjorie Lindholm of who Eugene, Oregon who is personally appreciative of landscape architecture student effort in her neighborhood Washburne Park.  She made this student award possible to foster continued recognition and cooperation between university students and community-scale projects.

ELIGIBILITY

All undergraduate or graduate students in good standing who are enrolled full-time in the landscape architecture program at the UO are eligible.  Students may be nominated for the award by members of the public, park management personnel, public or private organizations, and by faculty and students at the UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts.

CRITERIA

Students who have participated in the improvement and/or design of community-based design projects or who plan to participate in such a project in the next year will be considered for the award.  Community design projects need to occur within the city limits or urban growth boundary of Eugene.

Cherylyn K. Peterson Scholarship for Landscape Restoration

 

 

AWARD

$250 award for tuition support. May be divided among more than one applicant.

PURPOSE

To support ecological restoration projects, including restoration of

 

habitat, hydrology or other ecological functions.  Restoration may be

 

conceived as a process of returning landscape composition, structure or

 

function to a specified previous condition, or more broadly as a problem

 

solving tool that includes mitigative measures such as rehabilitation,

 

reclamation or re-creation of habitats and sites intended to enhance their

 

ecological value.

ELIGIBILITY

All full time 3rd, 4th or 5th year undergraduates and all graduate

 

students.

CRITERIA

Highest priority will be given to students proposing active involvement in a

 

restoration project, and secondarily to students otherwise showing a strong

 

commitment to restoration studies.  Proposals will be evaluated for their

 

potential to improve the ecological value of landscapes, for evidence of

 

critical thinking about the nature of restoration and its applications, and

 

for the student's potential to accomplish these goals.

Betty Marie Laudal Johnson Traveling Scholarship

 

 

AWARD

$2500 award for travel. May be divided among more than one applicant.  Requires public presentation of travel experience upon return to department.

PURPOSE

To award an upper division landscape architecture student whom the selection committee judges will most benefit from a travel experience.

ELIGIBILITY

Must be an undergraduate or graduate student who has completed a minimum of six terms in the U O Landscape Architecture program by the application deadline, and has a minimum of two terms remaining in the program.

CRITERIA

Recipient will derive the most benefit from the proposed travel experience.  Awardee must, within 3 months of return, give a lecture and/or exhibition based on the travel experience to the faculty and students of the Department of Landscape Architecture.

Donald M. Knott, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

 

 

AWARD

$700 in scholarship funds available. May be divided among more than one applicant.

PURPOSE

To recognize a student in landscape architecture who has demonstrated a particular aptitude for understanding the role and use of plant materials in site planning and design

ELIGIBILITY

All 3rd, 4th, 5th year undergraduate students and all graduate students are eligible.  If a graduate of the Greenwich, Connecticut school system is equally qualified, he or she should receive preference.

CRITERIA

Past performance in studios and plants courses.  Financial need is not a consideration.

Josephine Lumm Matsler Endowed Scholarship

 

 

AWARD

$1000 available in scholarship funds.  May be divided among more than one applicant.  This scholarship in memory of Josephine Lumm Matsler, a colleague and peer of George Jette and Fred Cuthbert.  1941 graduate of the University of Oregon, BLA.

PURPOSE

To provide a scholarship to native Oregonians in their third or fourth year in the professional program in landscape architecture who have demonstrated seriousness of purpose.

ELIGIBILITY

Third or fourth year undergraduate student in landscape architecture. Native Oregonians only.  In case of comparably qualified candidates, preference will be given to women.

CRITERIA

Financial need.  Demonstrated ability and potential. Demonstrated seriousness of purpose and scholarly achievements.

Jane Kerr Platt Scholarship

 

 

AWARD

$3000 available for a one-year scholarship.  To be divided among one or more graduate and one or more undergraduate students.

PURPOSE

To provide support for students who display excellence in plants and planting design. This scholarship is in honor of Jane Kerr Platt's knowledge of and interest in plants and planting design.  It is sponsored in conjunction with the Oregon Community Foundation.

ELIGIBILITY

Must have completed at least one year in the professional program, graduate or undergraduate. Must be a full-time student during period of scholarship (one year).

CRITERIA

Past performance in plants / plant design courses, as well as potential for excellence. Written statement addressing professional intentions required.  Financial need considered.

Barbara Fealy Memorial Scholarship Fund

 

 

AWARD

$4000 available for 01-02.  May be divided among more than one applicant. 

PURPOSE

This scholarship provided in memory of Barbara Fealy, a pioneering woman landscape architect, specializing in natural landscapes for private and public places.  To honor students carrying on the spirit of her work, providing financial assistance for students who demonstrate interest and promise in landscape design with native plants in a career oriented approach to landscape architecture.  In case of comparably qualified applicants, preference will be given to women.

ELIGIBILITY

Third or fourth year undergraduate, and/or graduate students, and program applicants who show promise.

CRITERIA

Demonstrated ability and potential in carrying on the spirit of Barbara Fealy’s work.

Society for Marketing Professional Service

 

 

MAJOR

Landscape Architecture, Architecture and Interior Architecture

AWARD

$1,000 per year to be awarded annually.  Awards will be made at the SMPS annual Awards Banquet (August 24, 2001).

PURPOSE

SMPS is a nationwide organization of individuals engaged in providing professional services to the built environment.  SMPS is based in Alexandria, VA with 46 chapters throughout the United States and Canada. SMPS Oregon is among the 10 largest chapters, with a membership of 150.

 

The SMPS Educational Scholarship was established to support students who are pursuing a career in marketing professional services or project management for A/E/C firms.  The scholarship is awarded in July of each year for the following academic year. Recipients are encouraged to attend the awards banquet in August (where the scholarship will officially be announced) as well as attend SMPS education and networking events throughout the year.  To further integrate students into the industry, member firms will be encouraged to offer intern opportunities for scholarship recipients.

ELIGIBILITY

Upper division 3rd or 4th year undergraduate or graduate students at Portland State University, Oregon State University or University of Oregon majoring in Architecture, Engineering, Construction or Marketing (includes architecture related disciplines I.E

Fred and Elva Cuthbert Emergency Student Loan Fund

AWARD

Up to $400.  Due in full, one year from date of issue.  Loan is interest free if paid in four months from date of issue.  After the first four-month period, the interest is 3%.

PURPOSE

To provide emergency financial assistance to A&AA majors currently enrolled in courses.

ELIGIBILITY

Students in fourth, fifth, or graduate years.  In the case of comparably qualified candidates, preference will be given to married students.  No cosigners are required.

Ellen M. Pennell Scholarship Fund

AWARD

Awards are limited to partial tuition credit, credited at registration; amount varies.

PURPOSE

This scholarship, made possible by income from a trust established by Ellen M. Pennell, is very limited.  Recipients must be academically "deserving and in need of assistance to enable them to pursue their college work."

ELIGIBILITY

Open to all majors in the School of Architecture and Allied Arts who have serious financial need, and who are making progress toward a degree.  Note:  recipients of Work-Study, Pell and SEOG grants may have their aid package reduced by the amount of any award.

SUBMISSION

Application packets are available Fall term from the receptionist in the Dean's Office, 105 Lawrence Hall.  The packet includes:

Student Travel Fund / A&AA Student Advisory Committee

Partial funding for student travel to a conference.

PURPOSE

To make it possible for students to participate in professional conferences by providing partial support for travel, conference fees, etc.

ELIGIBILITY

A&AA students who ae traveling to conferences, where their attendance is beneficial to the School or their major program.  Activities which will bring benefit to a large number of students in the major, school, may receive greater support.  Need and merit
