The "Connect-a-Colleague" experiment announced in the last newsletter,
<http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~jqj/fcn/news/fcn-news-951027.html>, seems
to be working. Several FCN participants have reported that they have met with
colleagues to assist them in beginning to use the World Wide Web. I hope all
FCN members will have a chance to do the exercise in the next few weeks!
Greg Bothun, <mailto:nuts@moo2>, recently completed a survey of the
desktop (i.e. in office) resources available to UO faculty. He received a
total of 693 responses -- a very high response rate. Some of the results
include:
What type of Computer is on the desktop:
- None: 46 (6.6%)
- Dumb Terminal: 5 (0.8 %)
- PC: 264 (38%)
- Mac: 351 (50%)
- Unix: 27 (4%)
In addition, he notes that about 70% of the faculty PCs
and 45% of faculty Macs are of types that he would describe as "reasonably
modern," and 56% have had the computer on the desktop for less than 2 years.
This is a selected and somewhat idiosyncratic list of upcoming conferences
relevant to ed tech, with an emphasis on conferences in the NorthWest. The
Educom calendar, <http://educom.edu/../events.calendar>, contains a more
extensive list of mainstream conferences.

CICnet, the network serving the Big Ten schools in the midwest, is developing a
prototype electronic journal collection. Their initial goal is to put together
the largest collection of public domain e-journals in the world, in the process
addressing issues of user interface, bibliographic access, archiving, and
distribution. For access to their prototype, see
<http://ejournals.cic.net/>.
This issue of the FCN news is somewhat abbreviated since many regular
contributors to the news were attending Educom during the first week of
November. Expect a report on the Educom conference in the next issue of this
newsletter.
The UO Faculty Consultants Network Newsletter is published (approximately)
twice a month. If you have materials for inclusion in the newsletter you can
send them to <mailto:jqj@darkwing>. This newsletter (as well
as other FCN-related material) is available on line in
<http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~jqj/fcn/>.
