instruction." Aug 1, 3:00-4:30pm, Knight Library Electronic Classroom.

(Architecture), and Margaret Rutkowski (SSIL).
- "
Watching
Your Step on the InfoCowPath", on freedom of information, child safety,

John Moseley has appointed his Educational Technology Committee for 1995-96.
This year's committee membership includes:

- Georgeanne Cooper, Coordinator, TEP
- Jim Crosswhite, Asst. Professor, English

- JQ Johnson, Academic Ed Coordinator, Library
- Zach Kelton, ASUO Vice President
- Steve Kevan, Profesor, Physics
- Chris Luebkeman, Asst. Professor, Architecture

- Dale Smith, Asst. Director, Network Services
- Jeff Stolet, Assoc. Professor, Music
- Jerry Tindal, Assoc. Professor, Special Ed
- Dan Udovic, Assoc. Professor & Head, Biology
The provost would
like to have this committee serve as a focal point for discussion of issues
involving educational technology at UO. He has suggested that issues the
committee address this year include, for example: (1) accessing the campus
network and Internet; (2) planning for equipping classrooms; (3) examining and
expanding the apprenticeship LEarn Program; (4) discussing electronic course
preparation and materials as scholarship; (5) establishing a central news group
to deal with faculty and student concerns; and (6) developing a priority list
of student and faculty immediate needs and addressing ways to meet them.
Alice Allen, Georgeanne Cooper, Chris Luebkeman, and Nancy Melone attended the
AAHE Teaching Learning and Technology Round Table meetings in Phoenix in July,
and are preparing a report for the Ed Tech committee on the meeting and the
opportunities for the UO to form its own TLTR.
I have a recommendation for interesting reading on the subject of instructional
technology: Laurillard, Diana, Rethinking university teaching: a framework
for the effective use of educational technology. London, Routledge, 1993.
Laurillard is quite negative about hypermedia, and although I think one can use
the web effectively to overcome the problems she sees, I think her presentation
of the problems is very astute and relevant.
You're using e-mail in your classes and would like better documentation to
give to your students? There's hope! There are several sources of materials
available.
The Computing Center is planning to produce a "course packet" of documentation
for students containing a set of handouts on getting Computing Center accounts,
using Pine for e-mail, and using the network.
In addition, several faculty members have developed useful handouts that they
are willing to share. I am starting a collection of such handouts, so if you
have one to contribute please let me know. Among my current handouts are:
- From Sharon Yoder (Education): An Introduction to Electronic Mail.
- This
is an extensive (38 p.) handout with local information oriented to UO students,
particularly those using a Mac on campus. It talks about getting a gladstone
account, using Pine to send, receive, and manage e-mail, file uploading and
downloading, and using gopher and USEnet news.
- From John Nicols (History):
- various handouts on using the Internet in
classes
- From JQ Johnson (Library):
- handouts used in Web publishing
workshops
As noted last issue, I'm planning to highlight a particular (refereed)
electronic journal in each issue of this newsletter. This issue's journal of
interest is EJournal, one of the oldest peer-reviewed electronic
journals. EJournal describes itself as "An Electronic Journal concerned with
the implications of electronic networks and texts," and is published by the
Department of English, State University of NY at Albany. EJournal is
traditionally delivered by e-mail, but is also available on the WWW; the June
issue is at <http://econwpa.wustl.edu/~hyperjrn/ejv5n1.htm>. From the
June table of contents:
- STEVAN HARNAD'S "SUBVERSIVE PROPOSAL": Kick-Starting Electronic
Scholarship, by Doug Brent, University of Calgary
- Editorial Comment: E-Publishing and Quality Control
- Notice: Cybernetics in Vienna, April 1996
- Note: About David Coniam's "Literacy for the Next Generation ..." in V2N2
