Online Resources for Ed Tech

Many online resources for people interested in educational technology now exist. Two of particular potential interest to the FCN community are:

  • the AAHEGSIT mailing list. This moderated Listserv list is maintained by Steven W. Gilbert, Technology Projects Coordinator for the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE). To subscribe, send a message with blank subject line and text "SUBSCRIBE AAHESGIT yourfirstname yourlastname" to <mailto:listproc@list.cren.net>.

New Media Center Status Report

From Art Farley, <mailto:art@cs.uoregon.edu>, 25 April 1995:

The New Media Center (NMC)is beginning to take shape in Suite 107 of the Riverfront Research Park. The mission of the NMC is to encourage and support the production and use of information technology as appropriate across the curriculum. Planned activities include reviewing, evaluating, and producing electronic courseware, offering workshops that give faculty an overview of what possibilities and resources exist for instructional technology, coordinating access to multimedia expertise, tools and equipment on campus, and providing opportunites for students to apply and develop skills in multimedia design and implementation by working on projects within the lab.

In partnership with Dynamix, a physical facility has been established and soon will be furnished. We are in the process of purchasing two high-end Dell (PC) computers and two Power Macs for multimedia software development. We have acquired Macromedia development software, as well. We received a grant from Sun Microsystems of a couple of Sparc 5 workstations with multimedia upgrades for network-related development. These six machines will constitute the initial platforms in the Center.

A Steering Committee has been established for the Center that will begin the process of deciding management directions and initial projects to be considered in the lab. Members of the Steering Committee are: Stead Upham, Zary Segall, Dan Udovic, Kevin Matthews, Kathy Heerema, Mike Holcomb, Al Stavitsky, Dave Moursund, and Erick Heroux. Please direct your comments or concerns to them.

On the Lighter Side

The World Wide Web has undergone a marvelous transformation as it has grown. One recent trend has been the publication of trivia, humor, or simply ironic commentary and self-reflection. Among the more interesting Web resources in the "dark side commentary" catgory are:
