diglib: ECCO and MOML tapes
Dear Diglib:
The Library is acquiring access to ECCO (18th Century Collections Online)
and the Making of Modern Law (MOML) from Thomson Gale. We are
purchasing the collections but we will also pay them an annual access fee
to host it for us. Typically for such deals, it is reasonable to
include language that gives us the option in the future to stop paying
that annual access fee and receive the data in some mutually agreed upon
format. Obviously, in the long run it might be cheaper to just keep
paying that fee--but just in case I always want us covered. Well,
it seems that this collection is going to be a little diferent.
Thomson Gale is actually sending us the tapes for these
collections. I might have mentioned before that we have purchased
electronic reference books from Gale. They are hosting these
e-books for us. We already had print copies of some, but Gale still
sent us XML copies of the titles on DVDs. I spoke briefly to Sara
about these DVDs and at the time we determined that we weren't in a
position to handle these right now. There was not a compelling
need. This prior experience made me suspect we might be facing the
acquisition of actual tapes with data for ECCO and MOML.. PLEASE DO
NOT PANIC: There is no compelling need to make the data on these
tapes work for us immediately or even in the near future. Thomson
Gale is still hosting these collections. However, I will need some
input from this group so we ask the right questions and have the correct
language in the contract. Conceivably we might not even be able to
handle storing the data.
I wish I had more info at this point, but I don't. Mark is working
on the details of this deal. I have asked him to find out more
information about these tapes so we can assess what we will do with them,
whether we can handle them, etc.
Happy holidays, the CDA grinch
