diglib: Art on File - Great Britain: Historical Garden Landscapes
I for CDs with the images for this collection from Art on File on
Monday.
I've finished setting up the prototype sample web pages and loading the
images into CONTENTdm for these new images.
http://libweb.uoregon.edu/catdept/digcol/aaa/gbg.html
Although there really are only 106 images in this project, the
"Browse all of this collection" link pulls in 114. This
is because it includes duplicates of the 9 images I'd already loaded, and
there is one image that was not included on the CDs.
A couple of issues and questions:
Initially, I was sent 9 images that were 300 dpi jpegs, 1180 pixels wide,
800 pixels high. The CD's did not contain jpegs. The tiffs on
the cds were at a lower resolution (72 dpi) and were approximately 3000
by 1900 pixels.
I generated jpegs for these that were 800 pixels tall and either 500 or
1200 wide depending on orientation.
These are test jpegs and can easily be replaced in the existing
collection. What do we want the final jpegs to look like? Was
it originally stipulated that AoF would give us JPEGs?
There are also some noticeable contrast differences between the jpegs and
the tiffs they have given us.
Examples can be seen by comparing the following pairs of images:
Their jpeg sent via email:

Our jpeg generated from their tiff:

Our jpeg:

Ours:

I think the jpegs I made from the tiffs look much better, but there's
definitely more information in theirs. I'm not sure whether we
should pursue this with them or not.
I was able to set this up in a fairly automated way. Rob gave me a
copy of their image database a while back, and I was able to author
queries that pulled about 20 fields from 3 tables and merged them into a
tab delimited file that works well for loading into CONTENTdm.
The fields I included from this source are:
Place Names
Collection Title
Collection Identifier
Project Title
Project Identifier
Project Description (Catalog Text in their DB)
Photo Group
If you're interested in seeing what other info is available in this
database, let me know.
