diglib: Digital Library CD policy/philosophy
This is the kind of collection development policy or philosophy I
would like to see us move toward for our digital collections. It
strikes me as user-centered and proactive. We would relate it to
current research and curricular needs. It is also flexible in terms
of being able to adapt to growth or expansion within a discipline.

I also think it allows for mixing resources that we might digitize from
our own holdings, purchase/license from a vendor or publisher, gather
from our own faculty, and link to freely on the Internet. This type
of collection development policy emphasizes that selection is an
intellectual exercise that librarians and faculty undertake to build
cohesive, sometimes comprehensive collections representing a specific
field. We don't just digitize to be digitizing and we don't just
link to resources to be linking.
This is exactly what Bob has done with e-Asia. What would happen if
we tried to identify another area and work with the appropriate and
willing subject specialist and the users to build another
collection? I am willing to float the idea out to subject
specialists. Maybe. Just maybe. We could convince Admin
that it was a worthwhile enough idea to allow that subject specialist the
proper time to do the research and gather the building blocks.
Maybe Bob would be willing to be the Library's "digital mentor"
and guide another subject specialist through the process.
