diglib: Fwd: L'Europe, les bibliotheques numeriques, les moteurs et la maitrise des contenus

For the French readers in the group, I thought this was
interesting. The main thing is that the Presidents/Prime
Ministers of France, Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain and
Hungary have sent a letter to the Presidents of the
European Union and the European Council to ask for
EU support for the development of a European
Digital Library.

The irony is that this has all happened because a
bunch of French librarians got all worked up over
Google's digitization efforts with some American
libraries. I say ironic because the Europeans are
far ahead of us already in terms of collaboration
on the development and application of standards.
I can't understand why they would feel threatened
by Google's project.
