diglib: Fwd: Saskia notes
DCC and AAA librarians,
At this time we are licensed and poised to purchase digital images from
Saskia either individually or in small collections--whatever our budget
will bear. Here are some brief notes I took during a very recent
conversation I had with Renate at Saskia. I was inquiring about what it
would take to purchase the whole enchilada from Saskia.
Saskia has about 30,443 images in Scholar's Resource right now. This
includes 911 about China recently added. Renate projects that they will
likely be adding about 1500 into the archive every year. Were we to move
on a purchase quickly, we would pay $6 per image for the jpegs. This adds
up to $183k, but if we moved quickly (apparently the mantra for everyone
these days), we would get a 20 percent discount. Add another $1 to get
the TIFF file. If we didn't want TIFFs right away, then we could update
later.
Saskia would deliver the images on a hard drive like Art on File will be
doing. Or we could opt for DVDs--terribly impractical given the size of
the collection. Renate said if we were using Luna (Insight) they could
deliver the images to Luna and then we could get them from Luna. They'd
have explain this acquisitions method some more. And then of course, we
don't have Luna and I don't think we have any plans in the future to get
it. . .
Anyway, the images are licensed in perpetuity--that means we own them but
we still have to abide by the terms of our agreement regarding how we use
them, etc. This info will be recorded in an ERM resource record with the
appropriate licensing record attached.. ERM is III's new module for
managing electronic (er.. digital) resources so we can keep up with all
these terms and conditions..
As I am sure AAA folks know, Saskia's photographer has a PhD in art
history from Columbia so the quality of the collection is high. It would
be fantastic to get it all.
Scholars Resource lists the sites or campus who already have site licenses
(like us for Saskia). In Oregon , Saskia has sold to Reed, PSU and they
are working on a consortial deal for the three campuses of WSU. I will
see about the interest in Orbis-Cascade because it could save money
perhaps. In a consortial deal, if a school has already spent $$, then
Saskia would prorate the purchase.
Metadata or slide annotations, etc. could be delivered in any form to help
clients import the information. Saskia has a data specialist whom they
would available to help with integration at no extra cost.
Questions???
