diglib: RE: thinking through maintenance of digital resources and building communication methods

Everyone:

Here's a graphic that I find helpful in thinking about long-term organizational & communication structures required to set priorities, develop, design, & maintain a high-quality, consistent web presence:
<http://www.dartmouth.edu/~webpub/resources/webteams/integrated.html>

This is a good representation of the inherently collaborative nature of media (web) development, & makes the point that assembling the expertise and institutional authority needed for success can *only* be accomplished in a cross-disciplinary team. In this model the major functional areas are broken out as
- Strategic Leadership
- Web Leadership/Management
- Content Development
- Creative/Design/Production
- Web Application Development, and
- Communications/Outreach/Marketing.

Note that each area has its own area of expertise, professional peer group, & research interests, but all operate together in a dynamic relationship.

What are some implications of a model like this for sitewide vs. subsite management? For starters, the relative weight of involvement from each functional area might vary according to the project. Also, in some cases authority can be delegated in advance -- for example, to Juanita as Web Coordinator, & to WAG, or to the Dig Lib voting group for digital library projects, etc. All core functions need to be deliberately included, though, or problems will arise sooner or later.

I have many more thoughts on this but no time to write them down now; to be continued, in one forum or another.
