Journal Club Team Presentation (20-minute team PowerPoint presentation with handout):
You will be assigned to one of six learning teams. Each team will give a 20-minute presentation on one of six scientific papers included in the course packet. The presentation must include: an introduction (1-2 min); a discussion of methodology: 5-7 min; a description of results (5 min); conclusion (2-3 min); and discussion period (5-10 minutes). You are required to use PowerPoint or a similar presentation technology. A Dell Inspiron lap top (w/ Windows 98 and PowerPoint 2000), an LCD projector, and a laser pointer are available for your use. Your team should bring your perfectly formatted presentation on floppy disk or zip disk. The lecture must be accompanied by a 1-page typewritten handout. Make enough copies for all class members.
Critical dates: 2/1, 3/1, 3/8: Presentations and handouts due (as assigned).
5-minute pharmacology report with handout:
Each team will present a 5-8 minute oral report on one specific classification of drug. The presentation must be accompanied by a typewritten handout! Make enough copies for each member of the class (length=one page maximum). Describe your drug using the following format: (1) typical generic and brand names; (2) medical indication (What's it prescribed for?); (3) pharmacology/biochemistry/mechanism of action; (3) effects of the medication on HR, BP, EKG, and response to exercise.
Critical date: Friday, February 22: Presentation and handout due.
