Announcements - as of Thursday, February 16, 2006
It has come to my attention that your edition of Abelard and Heloise differs from mine in its pagination. So, instead of pp. 57-106 read pp. 3-46 (still Historia calamitatum). And instead of pp. 159-79 read 93-111 (beginning "I would not want to give you cause for finding me disobedient").
Guidelines on Midterm
- The midterm will require you to design and explain a tree of knowledge for a new university modeled on Alexander von Humboldt's multifarious academic interests.
- A tree of knowledge may be likened to a family tree or the organizational chart for a large bureaucracy or business. I am deliberately leaving the format open otherwise to encourage creativity.
- Consult your UO course catalog (in print or online) or look at university course catalogs and/or department lists in arts and sciences colleges elsewhere (by Googling Harvard, or Berkeley, for example). The adventurous among you may want to consult the organizational chart for the University of Oregon, looking especially at the way the College of Arts and Sciences is subdivided as a bureaucratic and academic entity.
- As you read Humboldt, make a list of all the disciplines or subfields he makes a contribution to.
- You will be allowed to consult your notes and books during the midterm.
