State Board Meeting 27 January 2004

The first organizational meeting of the new State Board was held Tuesday 27 January 2004 from 1000-1020. They elected Goldschmidt as Chair and Richmond as Vice-chair. They picked 2 other members of the executive committee but left the 5th seat vacant. They discussed the fact that the standing committees of the State Board will have community college partners and possibly also private partners. There will be committees dealing with Access, Productivity, Academic Excellence, and Economic Development. The next board meeting will be in Eugene on February 19/20. The Thursday meeting will begin at 1600 and there will be presentations by the Presidents of UO and OIT. The usual socialization with the faculty will be omitted in the interests of fitting this in -- they intend to have a serious conversation with the Presidents. Normally it would take 8 months for these conversations; by doing 2 per meeting, they can get the job done in 4 months.

After they know the outcome of Prop 30, they will ask the governor what authority he will give them to make decisions. If Prop 30 fails, send notification to all the employees in the Chancellor's office -- not to the entire system. The current position freeze is causing some problems on the various campuses. They need to have this conversation after the February 3 vote. To get the right set of principles. They will spend probably the entire meeting Friday February 20 on the committee structures and on discussions.

Respectfully submitted

Peter B Gilkey (President IFS 2004)
