Workshop Project

Over the course of the workshop, participants will design and produce a sample ELT mini-lesson plan or activity that incorporates web-based computer use. On the final day of the workshop, participants will demonstrate their projects and evaluate others' projects during the poster session.

Workshop content may be adjusted, depending on participants' skill level, needs and interests. The workshop will be typically structured each day as:

3:00-3:30 Housekeeping, announcements and review.
3:30-4:15 Demonstrations, mini-lectures and information dissemination.
4:15-4:30 Break.
4:30-7:30 Work on projects and activities.
7:30-8:00 Debrief and "Food for Thought".

Day 1

  • Introductions.
  • Workshop overview, schedule and expectations.
  • Pre-workhop assessment of participants.
  • Mini-lecture on "How has the Web Evolved and Where is the Web Today Relative to ELT?"
  • General framework for evaluation of CALL Web resources.
  • Demonstration on "Examples of Web Resources Applied in an ELT Setting."
  • Participants break into pairs or small cohorts based on common professional interests.
  • MS Word, review of tables feature.
  • Participants collaborate with their partners to design a working framework for evaluation of Web resources, based on the general guidelines given above, that is specific to their educational setting.
    Important: Document to be produced on the computer; printed copy due by the end of this workshop day.
  • Sign up for services for NiceNet, and QuizCenter (University of Hawaii).
  • Debrief, sharing, one group presents "Food for Thought" to all of us.

Day 2

  • Housekeeping, as needed (schedule adjustments, questions, announcements, etc.).
  • Review, as needed, from previous day.
  • Detailed information on the Day 5 poster sessions (format, expectations and samples).
  • Netscape: review of web browser features and searches.
  • Web demonstrations and mini-lecture on "Synchronous Communication in an ELT Setting".
  • Samples of language courses that incorporate web-based technology.
  • Participants collaborate with their partners to design a working template for lesson plan development, based on the examples in the demonstration above, that is specific to their educational setting.
    Important: Documents will be produced on the computer; printed copies are due by the end of this workshop day.
  • Participants collaborate within their groups to design a mini-lesson plan and activity using one of the demonstrated web-based tools that can be used in their educational setting.
    Important: Documents will be produced on the computer; printed copies are due by the end of this workshop day.
  • Debrief, sharing, a second group presents "Food for Thought" to all of us.

Day 3

  • Housekeeping, as needed (schedule adjustments, questions, announcements, etc.).
  • Review, as needed, from previous day(s).
  • Web demonstrations and mini-lecture on "Asynchronous Communication in an ELT Setting".
  • MS Word: Save as HTML feature.
  • Netscape Composer: Review of features.
  • Continue small group and independent project work.
  • Debrief, sharing, a third group presents "Food for Thought" to all of us.

Day 4

  • Housekeeping, as needed (schedule adjustments, questions, announcements, etc.).
  • Review, as needed, from previous day(s).
  • Web demonstrations and mini-lecture on "Creating Quizlets and Using Forms in an ELT Setting"".
  • Group Activity: Develop criteria for what constitutes an effective quiz.
  • Continue small group and independent project work.
  • Debrief, sharing, a fourth group presents "Food for Thought" to all of us.

    Day 1 || Day 2 || Day 3 || Day 4 || Day 5 || Top

Day 5

  • Housekeeping, as needed (schedule adjustments, questions, announcements, etc.).
  • Review, as needed, from previous day(s).
  • Small group and independent work on projects.
  • Poster sessions.
  • Post-workshop assessment of participants.
  • Evaluation of workshop by participants.
  • Debrief, sharing, closing "Food for Thought" for all of us.
