Workshop Project

Over the course of the workshop, participants will design and produce a sample ELT mini-lesson plan or activity that incorporates the use of one or more computers in their educational settings. On the final day of the workshop, participants will demonstrate their projects and evaluate others' projects during the poster session.

The workshop will be typically structured each day as:

3:00-3:30 Housekeeping, announcements and review.
3:30-5:15 Demonstrations, mini-lectures and information dissemination.
5:15-5:30 Break.
5:30-7:30 Work on projects and activities.
7:30-8:00 Debrief and "Food for Thought".

Day 1

  • Introductions.
  • Workshop overview, schedule and expectations.
  • Pre-workhop assessment of participants.
  • Mini-lecture on "CALL Software Past, Present and Future."
  • General framework for evaluation of CALL software.
  • Demonstration on "Examples of Software Applied in an ELT Setting."
  • Participants break into pairs or small cohorts based on common professional interests.
  • Participants collaborate with their partners to design a working framework for software evaluation, based on the general guidelines given above, that is specific to their educational setting.
    Important: Document to be produced on the computer; printed copy due by the end of this workshop day.
  • Participants collaborate with their partners to design a working template for lesson plan development, based on the examples in the demonstration above, that is specific to their educational setting.
    Important: Documents will be produced on the computer; printed copies of final projects are due by the end of this workshop.
  • Software demonstration on "MS Office, Word Processing Tools for Educators."
    Participants collaborate within their groups to design an in-progress mini-lesson plan and activity using a word processor that can be used in their educational setting.
    Important: Documents will be produced on the computer; printed copies of final projects are due by the end of this workshop.
  • Debrief, sharing, one group presents "Food for Thought" to all of us.

Day 2

  • Housekeeping, as needed (schedule adjustments, questions, announcements, etc.).
  • Review, as needed, from previous day.
  • Detailed information on the Day 5 poster sessions (format, expectations and samples).
  • Software demonstrations and mini-lecture on "Listening and Vocabulary Programs".
  • Software evaluation at stations.
    Important: Participants must complete a written evaluation task before moving to a new station.
  • Small group and independent project work using the framework and template developed on Day 1 and any materials participants have brought with them.
  • Debrief, sharing, a second group presents "Food for Thought" to all of us.

Day 3

  • Housekeeping, as needed (schedule adjustments, questions, announcements, etc.).
  • Review, as needed, from previous day(s).
  • Software demonstrations and mini-lecture on "Reading and Grammar Programs".
  • Software evaluation at stations.
    Important: Participants must complete a written evaluation task before moving to a new station.
  • Small group and independent project work using framework and template developed on Day 1 and any materials participants have brought with them.
  • Debrief, sharing, a third group presents "Food for Thought" to all of us.

Day 4

  • Housekeeping, as needed (schedule adjustments, questions, announcements, etc.).
  • Review, as needed, from previous day(s).
  • Software demonstrations and mini-lecture on "Simulations and Discussion/Speaking Programs".
  • Software evaluation at stations.
    Important: Participants must complete a written evaluation task before moving to a new station.
  • Small group and independent project work using framework and template developed on Day 1 and any materials participants have brought with them.
  • Debrief, sharing, a fourth group presents "Food for Thought" to all of us.

Day 5

  • Housekeeping, as needed (schedule adjustments, questions, announcements, etc.).
  • Review, as needed, from previous day(s).
  • Independent software evaluation at stations, as needed.
  • Small group and independent work on projects. Hand in printed copies to workshop leaders.
  • Poster sessions.
  • Post-workshop assessment of participants.
  • Evaluation of workshop by participants.
  • Debrief, sharing, closing "Food for Thought" for all of us.
