Incoming Students for Fall 2008What to Do After You Arrive on Campus When you arrive on campus, meet with Rebecca Lynn, Graduate Coordinator, first. She will explain administrative items that need to be taken care of right away. Orientation Meetings. Below is a list of the orientation meetings for Fall 2008. Only the History Department meetings (and SPEAK Test, if non-native speakers of English) are mandatory.
Orientation Meetings. Please note that the Teaching Effectiveness Program is a free workshop. If you are a first-time GTF, we in the History Department strongly encourage you to avail yourself of this invaluable resource. Office Copy Machine. Each graduate student is allotted 500 copies per year. These copies are to be used for copying your research materials. The Graduate Coordinator will issue you a copy code. Keys. Each graduate student is authorized to have keys for their office (may be a shared office), the graduate lounge, and the department mailroom. The keys are picked up at the Office of Public Safety located in Straub Hall. There is a deposit required on keys, which is generally $5.00 per key, refundable when the key is returned to Public Safety. Phone. In some cases graduate students may be sharing a phone with another graduate student. The University of Oregon uses an audix system that has a voice message system built in. Office. Each graduate student will be assigned an office. In some cases students may be sharing an office with another graduate student. Student I.D card. To get a student I.D. card, go to the Erb Memorial Union (EMU), our student union, to student I.D. located on the first floor. The student I.D. also enables UO students to ride the bus system (Lane Transit District) for free. Knight Library. The UO library system includes several different libraries, including Map and Law Libraries. The place for history graduate students to begin is with the Knight Library, which contains general book and periodical collections, microfilms, government documents, a Media Services Center and the UO Special Collections and Archives. Knight Library offers regular tours. New graduate students are encouraged to take a tour prior to starting classes. You should have received an admit letter from the Office of Admissions. At the bottom of the first page you have been issued a Personal Assess Code (PAC). This is your identifier for registering for classes. You can register for classes on Duck Web (on-line). Duck Web is an on-line interactive application, developed to allow students access to the UO's Student Information System for initial registration of classes or changes to the current schedule. Access Duck Web through http://duckweb.uoregon.edu/. Instructor Consent is required for some History classes. In the main office (275 McKenzie) there are Instructor Consent Forms available. Pick up a form, take it to the instructor and get his or her signature, then turn the form in to the Graduate Coordinator. She will put you into Banner, the UO student data system. This will allow you to register for the class. If you want to get instructor approval prior to your arrival on campus, contact the instructor via email and have the instructor email the Graduate Coordinator (rlynn@uoregon.edu) with the approval. All new graduate students are required to take HIST 612, Historical Methods and Writing, so the Graduate Coordinator will already have put you in Banner. Contract. All GTFs will receive a GTF contract stating the payment amount, dates of employment and teaching assignment if it is known at the time. If you are accepting the contract, sign and date it, then return it to the Graduate Coordinator. All contracts start on September 16. GTFs are expected to be on campus by that date. If you are unable to arrive by September 16, contact the Director of Graduate Studies. General Duties and Requirements Statement (GDRS). Each contract will include a GDRS that clarifies information concerning GTFs offered by the Department of History. The relationship between GTFs and the University is governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the University and the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation (GTFF). Payroll. The Graduate Coordinator will send you a multitude of payroll forms for you to complete and return. The payroll forms will be sent to you after your signed contract is received in the History Department. GTF Assignments. Fall term assignments are announced no later than September 1. You will be notified in writing of your assignment, which will be either to lead two discussion sections of 25 students each or grading papers up to 85 students for a non-survey class. You will be given instructions to contact the instructor of the course. He or she will give you directions on your GTF assignment. Desk Copies. Desk copies will be ordered for you. When they arrive they will be put in your office mailbox. In some cases publishers do not send desk copies. When that happens the Graduate Coordinator will give you a department account code to charge the books at the UO Bookstore. There are several possibilities for locating housing in Eugene. UO Family Housing and Apartments. The University Housing maintains a variety of houses and apartment complexes. To learn more about UO Family Housing go to their web site http://housing.uoregon.edu/ or request a brochure from the Graduate Coordinator. Eugene Register-Guard classified ads. The local newspaper is the Eugene Register-Guard. You can access the Sunday classified ads through their web site www.registerguard.com Roommates. Occasionally current graduate students are looking for roommates. If you are interested in contacting one of these students, let the Graduate Coordinator know. Where to get a UO Email Account In order to get a UO email account you must register for classes first. You can obtain an account from the Computer Center. Their web site is (http://cc.uoregon.edu/policy/get_account.html). Inform the Graduate Coordinator of your email address as soon as you get it. The Plan of Study is your graduate program as determined by your faculty advisor and yourself. How to complete a Plan of Study will be discussed during the History Graduate Student Orientation Meeting. Each graduate student will file a Plan of Study by the end of their first quarter.
