Doctoral Program

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

All students are required to pass a departmental language exam that tests the ability to read and comprehend a passage of average difficulty drawn from primary sources or the secondary literature. The language exam is offered once each quarter during the regular academic year.

PLAN OF STUDY

By the end of the first quarter in the program, students are required to file a Plan of Study, signed by the advisor, in which they state their major and minor fields, list all anticipated course work and specify their language requirement. The Plan of Study may be modified later by agreement of both student and advisor. All Plans of Study are reviewed and approved by the Graduate Committee.

MAJOR FIELD REQUIREMENT

Students must declare a major field of study. The major field will be chosen from the list of Major and Minor Fields.

MINOR FIELD REQUIREMENT

Students satisfy the minor field requirement by completing three courses AND preparing either a course syllabus OR a bibliographic/historiographic essay of at least 25 pages.

CREDIT REQUIREMENTS

Instead of a minimum total number of credit hours, the Graduate School enforces several enrollment requirements:

  • continuous enrollment with at least 3 credits per quarter until all program requirements are completed,
  • three years of accredited full-time graduate work (9 credit hours a quarter) beyond the baccalaureate degree, and
  • at least three consecutive quarters of full-time study in residence (with at least 9 graduate credit hours a quarter).

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Doctoral students are expected to take the HIST 612, 613, 614 sequence. They may be exempted from all or part of it only if they have already taken the sequence as part of the M.A. program at the University of Oregon or if they completed graduate courses at another institution determined by the Graduate Committee to be substantially equivalent to HIST 612, 613, 614. In addition, doctoral students must complete two History research seminars or colloquia (HIST 507, 607, 608).

SYLLABUS REQUIREMENT

As part of the major field requirement, students must design an expanded course syllabus on a topic within the field and pass an oral defense of the syllabus.

ORAL EXAMINATION

Students demonstrate their mastery of their major field in an oral examination.

DISSERTATION REQUIREMENT

Dissertation Prospectus. Student will submit a dissertation prospectus to their dissertation committee for approval.

Dissertation Hours. Doctoral candidates must register for a minimum of 18 credit hours of dissertation hours after advancement to candidacy.

Dissertation Defense. The dissertation must make an original scholarly contribution to the field. The student will defend the dissertation in a formal public forum.
