Doctoral Program
LANGUAGE
REQUIREMENT
All students are
required to pass a departmental language exam that tests the ability
to read and comprehend a passage of average difficulty drawn from primary
sources or the secondary literature. The language exam is offered once
each quarter during the regular academic year.
PLAN
OF STUDY
By the end of the
first quarter in the program, students are required to file a Plan of
Study, signed by the advisor, in which they state their major and minor
fields, list all anticipated course work and specify their language
requirement. The Plan of Study may be modified later by agreement of
both student and advisor. All Plans of Study are reviewed and approved
by the Graduate Committee.
MAJOR
FIELD REQUIREMENT
Students must declare
a major field of study. The major field will be chosen from the list
of Major and Minor Fields.
MINOR
FIELD REQUIREMENT
Students satisfy
the minor field requirement by completing three courses AND preparing
either a course syllabus OR a bibliographic/historiographic essay
of at least 25 pages.
CREDIT
REQUIREMENTS
Instead of a minimum
total number of credit hours, the Graduate School enforces several enrollment
requirements:
- continuous enrollment with
at least 3 credits per quarter until all program requirements are
completed,
- three years of accredited
full-time graduate work (9 credit hours a quarter) beyond the baccalaureate
degree, and
- at least three consecutive
quarters of full-time study in residence (with at least 9 graduate
credit hours a quarter).
COURSE
REQUIREMENTS
Doctoral students
are expected to take the HIST 612, 613, 614 sequence. They may be exempted
from all or part of it only if they have already taken the sequence
as part of the M.A. program at the University of Oregon or if they completed
graduate courses at another institution determined by the Graduate Committee
to be substantially equivalent to HIST 612, 613, 614. In addition, doctoral
students must complete two History research seminars or colloquia (HIST
507, 607, 608).
SYLLABUS
REQUIREMENT
As part of the
major field requirement, students must design an expanded course syllabus
on a topic within the field and pass an oral defense of the syllabus.
ORAL
EXAMINATION
Students demonstrate
their mastery of their major field in an oral examination.
DISSERTATION
REQUIREMENT
Dissertation
Prospectus. Student will submit a dissertation prospectus to their
dissertation committee for approval.
Dissertation
Hours. Doctoral candidates must register for a minimum of 18 credit
hours of dissertation hours after advancement to candidacy.
Dissertation
Defense. The dissertation must make an original scholarly contribution
to the field. The student will defend the dissertation in a formal public
forum.
APPLICATION
DEADLINE
The History Department
accepts applications for Fall term admission only. Applications
and application packet materials for Fall 2009 admission must be post
marked by December 15, 2008.
