American Indian History: Native Sovereignty

The definition and exercise of tribal sovereignty has been a matter of central concern to all Native communities in the United States for more than two centuries. In recent decades it has become a matter for national headlines, from the recognition of basic treaty rights and religious freedoms to the development of new tribal colleges and the growth of Indian Gaming. This course will examine American Indian history through the fundamental issue of tribal sovereignty, with particular emphasis on contemporary developments within the Pacific Northwest –including casinos, salmon, dams, Kennewick Man, natural resource management, the exercise of treaty rights on public lands and a host of other matters.
