SUMMER 2005 The Fall of France 1940 (Hist 399)
Prof. Dracobly
First Summer Session 2005
8:00-10:00 AM

This course examines the reasons for France’s “strange defeat” in 1940. The superiority of German weapons and tactics? The incompetence and irresponsibility of France’s military leadership? The failures of France’s political leadership? The decadance of the Third Republic? Or, perhaps, the work of fifth columnists?

Readings will include Marc Bloch, Strange Defeat; Ernest May, Strange Victory; and Julian Jackson, The Fall of France; as well as a selection of primary sources, articles and a film.
