Instructions for the Final Project/Paper -- Psychology 302
Read carefully!
Before you start: You will need three things -- a piece of paper and (for step 2 and beyond) a floppy disk, and access to a computer with SPSS for Windows.
Note: If you encounter anything in these instructions that appears to be unclear or wrong in some way, please e-mail Dr. Saucier about it: gsaucier@oregon.uoregon.edu.
STEP 1
On a sheet of paper, make a list of 30 people you know very well, or have known very well at sometime in your life.
"Knowing very well" means that you have seen the person in a variety of situations, good times, bad times, in different places and with different people.
They may be friends, family members, co-workers, or someone you were involved with in some way.
If you would like, one of the people could be you yourself, but be sure to use a code (see below) that would not give away to anyone else who saw your data that it was you.
Make sure that you have at least 10 people of each gender -- that is, you should have at least ten females and at least ten males. (This could mean having 10 of one gender and 20 of the other, or 15 of each gender -- any combination as long as each gender has at least 10 people representing it.)
Next, convert each of the 30 names to some kind of code, such as first-name initial (plus maybe last-name initial) or some numbers, that would make the identification of the person unclear except to you. Note the code you used on the sheet of paper. (You won't be handing this paper in, it is for your reference only.)
When you are finished with this step (when you have your list on paper, with 30 names converted to initials), go on to step 2.
