Activities and Sports

Community Service

The fraternities'/sororities' interests and concerns go beyond the confines of campus life. Fraternities and sororities sponsor a multitude of activities each year to earn money or donate time to their special philanthropies. A philanthropy is a group effort to help the community by raising money for a needy cause or performing a service project. Fraternities and sororities help others in need and contribute to a variety of causes sponsored by the national fraternities and sororities.

The opportunities to work with philanthropies and community service projects are endless. Each year the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils sponsor an all-Greek philanthropy during the fall and spring. Every chapter is invited to participate and provide activities/projects for the University of Oregon and Eugene communities. The ability to give of yourself is probably one of the most important qualities you will develop while living in a fraternity or sorority. You will experience the feeling of being needed while being of service to others.

University of Oregon's fraternities and sororities participate in philanthropy projects to help less fortunate people in our community.

Last year fraternities and sororities contributed countless number of hours and money to worthy charities such as Children's Miracle Network, American Cancer Society, United Way Foundation, Aid to the Blind as well as other local philanthropies. Over $30,000 was raised to support these important causes and organizations.

Many of these fund-raising projects are competitive events that involve all chapter members. Annual events include Anchor Splash and the Millrace Cleanup, along with beach cleanups, spaghetti feeds and sports tournaments.

These activities not only raise money for worthy causes, but also provide excellent opportunities to meet people and make new friends. Helping others helps us learn about our responsibility to the community.

Service vs. Philanthropy

Fraternities and sororities are involved with both philanthropy and service learning initiatives here at the University of Oregon. Philanthropy is often associated with doing a particular activity that raises money for a group or organization and donating that money directly to the organization's needs or projects. Service learning is the "hands on" version of donating your time. Both forms of community service, philanthropy and service learning, are needed and can make significant impacts in the lives of people in need.

Intramurals

With a great intramural and recreation program, University of Oregon students can participate in a sport they enjoyed in high school or learn new sports. The intramural league offers competition in flag football, cross-country, golf, track, badminton, racquetball, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, softball and many more sports. Moral support is an important aspect of intramurals, and it is not unusual to see chapter members as spectators at an intramural game. In addition, several aerobics classes and other free-time recreation opportunities are offered at the Recreation Complex.
