ARCH 610 EMAILS -----sent March 4, 2009: Ways to earn more points ------ Dear Students, As we head towards the end of the term, I wanted to clarify expectations and opportunities. I will be looking at your ePortfolio site for evidence of your abilities to apply computer graphics software. You can include other examples of digital graphics created during the term, such as posters for Human Context. Upload a screen-capture of large posters (max 800 x 600 pixels) with description of how it fits into your learning (i.e. course context, purpose, skills developed). You can use the text description to build a case for how the particular graphic work satisfies assignment requirements or demonstrates relevant skills. The students who are applying the software to the design studio or other classes are making good progress. Ways to improve your Participation Grade I created a lot of different ways to earn participation points so that eager beginners could make up for less polished assignments. - posting work done for other classes - make sure we know to look for this by linking to it from your Graphics index page (the pages can also be listed under Studio or Misc) - viewing Lynda.com videos or self-report use of other tutorials - commenting on other students' projects (please check the assignment for who you are to review and what are the evaluation criteria). - filling out the Midterm Assessment of Teaching on Blackboard so I can improve next year's class. - describing and linking examples of strong architectural presentations or computer graphics resources on the Wiki (http://archgraphics.pbwiki.com, login with email: graphics@uoregon.edu, password: cs4class) Be sure to annotate the entries with your initials. - coming to Office Hours Details are on the Feb. 28 grading spreadsheet (which did not include all attendance tallies) with a qualitative description of grading here: http://www.uoregon.edu/~graphics/syllabus/grading_clarif.html Quiz Optional Instead of requiring a quiz as part of your grade, I have created an optional open-book quiz on Blackboard that asks you two essay questions, and gives you a random subject to model, render and photocollage. If you take this quiz, it will count towards your course average. You can take it as many times as you like with a maximum of 75 minutes per try. If you don't take the quiz, then everything else counts more. I added more sign-up times for tomorrow Thursday http://archgraphics.pbwiki.com/Arch610-conferences and I would be happy to give feedback on studio presentations as well as discuss your class work. Please bring graphics for feedback or post screen-captures and email me the link. - Nancy -----sent March 10, 2009: ePortfolios ------ Students, I enjoyed seeing the many ways you incorporated computer graphics into your design work. If you are interested in uploading your final studio presentation, consider how to make it accessible. You might want to present the top highlight images and display a 1024 x 768 JPG of the whole thing, since images are easier to load and display in the ePortfolio system. Or you can Optimize the PDF file (even at 72 dpi the file could be big) and upload it as a "File" (NOT an Image), link to it from an embedded image. Make sure we can find this by adding a link from your Graphics index page. Use your ePortfolio to demonstrate how you are developing proficiency with the computer graphics. I have posted some Portfolio Design Criteria to help you understand more specifically what I value in the online work. http://www.uoregon.edu/~graphics/syllabus/610w09_eportfolio_standards.pdf Please contact me or your tutor if you have any questions about how to best show your work. I've asked the tutors to add office hours to the sign up sheet after they finish their review: http://archgraphics.pbwiki.com/Arch610-conferences login: graphics@uoregon.edu, password: cs4class. I should clarify that we need all work for the class to be posted online by the Final review, Tuesday March 17 Saint Patrick's Day, 10:00am pinup. - Nancy -----sent March 13, 2009: What's Due? ------ To clarify, all your work for the class must be online via your ePortfolio site by the Final Review pinup time, Tuesday March 17 at 10:00 am. For the hardcopy pin-up, you need to bring 1) your 3-person brochure (2 pages each minimum, additionally a front and back cover would be nice) and 2) four examples from each member of digital graphic work from the term. The latter could be printouts of your assignments OR other architectural graphics. As we won't have enough wall space for full studio presentations, you can bring a mini-version or excerpts for feedback. Use this final push to put your work in the best light. Use the ePortfolio to record of your progress in using digital media for architectural design and presentation. Let me know if you have logistical questions or want feedback on your brochure layout (send me an reasonable size image or upload a draft to your ePortfolio). Contact your tutor for detailed software questions or to arrange a conference for participation points. - Nancy --------------------
