Research Team |
Pema Chhophyel Pema is the founding father of the Kurtöp Documentation Project. As a native speaker of Kurtöp from Dungkar he came to the linguistics department at the University of Oregon with a desire to document his native language before it vanished. He has provided, collected, transcribed and analyzed countless hours of data in the United States and Dungkar, Bhutan. In addition to consulting for all aspects of the Kurtöp Documentation Project, he is pursuing a career in Business and will receive his B.A in Business Administration from the University of Oregon in summer of 2007.

Under the guidance of her advisor, Dr. Scott DeLancey, Gwen is the primary investigator and director for the Kurtöp Documentation Project. One of the products of the project, a descriptive and historical grammar of Kurtöp, will be her PhD dissertation in Linguistics from the University of Oregon. She is passionately devoted to the study of the Tibeto-Burman languages of Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh.

Karma Tshering Karma is the Bhutanese half of the project's direction. As collaborator, he assists with data collection, transcription and analysis in addition to overseeing all logistics in Bhutan. The project's trilingual Kurtöp/English/Dzongkha dictionary is also a responsibility he shares with Gwen. Karma's experience with Bodish languages and linguistics is extensive. He is a native speaker of Dzongkha, was trained in Classical Tibetan at the Simtokha Rikzhung Institute, Thimphu, and has been a member of the Himalayan Languages Research Project (click here for his site there) in Leiden since 1997. When not researching Bhutan's fascinating languages and history, he enjoys his time as a tour operator for his company Bhutan Paragliding. |

Kuenga Lhendup Kuenga Lhendup is a native speaker of Kurtöp from Tabi. He has a B.A. Hons in English from Sherubtse College (affiliated with Delhi University). Thanks to his excellent knowledge of English and Kurtöp, he has meticulously processed hours of texts for the project and contributed hundreds of lexical items to the dictionary. Kuenga presently works as an Administrative Officer at the Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan. The Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan is a Non-Government Organization established under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen of Bhutan Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck, for the preservation and promotion of the intricate textile art of Bhutan. |

Kezang Wangchuk Kezang is a native speaker of Kurtöp from Thuke. He has he donated his time for conversation analysis and research projects examining the perception and production of tone. He is currently living in Los Angeles.
