Scope of the project and resources available to the FACULTY TEAMS from the FIRST II project:

Year one 2002

A. The four new faculty teams attend a four-day workshop from May 16-20, 2002 at the University of Oregon's Institute of Marine Biology.  The goals of the workshop are to:

Introduce the FIRST project.
Prepare the faculty team to implement professional development for undergraduate faculty from five institutional teams.
Develop recruitment strategies for teams from five institutions within the region.

Resources available from FIRST:

·        Funds for room and board at the workshop.

·        $150 stipend for each faculty participant.

Resources required from the faculty team:

·        Travel to the workshop.

B. Each faculty team will participate in a 1-2 day professional development workshop run by their FIRST I team mentors.

Year two 2003

Each FIRST faculty team has been allotted $7,000 to cover programmatic expenses for the second year of the project.  A memorandum of understanding will be drafted between the UO and your administrative unit prior to the distribution of these funds. Institutional overhead is not allowed on these programmatic expenses.

Allowable use of these funds

Personnel, such as administrative, graduate student or faculty support.
Communication costs.
Travel costs and other expenses associated with the development of the institutional teams.
Computer hardware or software to use for the FIRST II project.
Supplies needed by the faculty teams to implement the FIRST II project.
Professional development of the institutional teams including supplies,  and a one day workshop where the faculty teams introduce the FIRST II project to the five regional institutions teams.

In addition the grant will provide the following funds in year two:

$50/person/day for subsistence costs for six days of professional development workshops for your institutional teams (all travel expenses for the institutional teams are the responsibility of their institution).

Year three 2004

Resources from the grant:

$7000 of programmatic support for each faculty team (allowable uses are as above).
$2000 for subsistence costs for professional development workshops for your institutional teams.
Travel funds and food and lodging costs for the faculty team leaders to attend a three-day professional development and planning workshop.

Year four 2005

Resources from the grant:

$6000 of programmatic support for each faculty team (allowable uses are as above).
$1000 for subsistence costs for professional development workshops for your institutional teams.
Funds for selective participants from the FIRST II project to attend the annual Ecological Society of America meeting to participate in a symposium about faculty professional development.
