Research Interest: My research interests lie in the areas of applied forest economics and management, and the application of modern teaching/learning pedagogies to integrated resource management education.

Inquiry-based education experience and interest: I have participated since 1983 as a member of the teaching faculty in the natural resources summer camp, teaching field application courses in the areas of land survey and forest measurements. I have been the lead instructor for a course in chain saw safety and handling for College of Natural Resources majors.

In addition, I developed and coordinated the PATHWAYS Program for the CNR. This program is designed to introduce culturally diverse high school aged youth to career and educational opportunities in Natural Resources. The focus of this program has been to involve the participants in inquiry-based field techniques and measurements in a variety of discipline areas. The goal is to allow the students the opportunity to identify possible interest areas and stimulate their interest in pursuing further education in those areas.

Research Interests: My research interests relate to experiential education teaching methods. Since 1991, I have been involved with teaching in both the formal and informal setting. From 1991 to March of 1998, I was the Executive Director of the Outdoor Skills Center in Plymouth, Wisconsin. I developed and taught many inquiry-based field experiences for middle school and high school youth. I also developed and taught several courses for teachers, serving as an adhoc faculty member for UWSP. At the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station, I teach a practicum course for all environmental education majors and minors. The practicum students serve as the Station’s front line teachers for environmental education programs provided for 27 area school systems.

Inquiry-based education experience and interest: Over the past 8 years, I have been involved in developing a variety of experiential programs in the areas of environmental education, adventure education and outdoor pursuits. Each of these programs was of a hands-on nature, that included personal research and discovery of scientific principles. I have found all students to grow and learn well as they participate in active learning. This type of learning brings alive the concepts and helps the student see the relevance in their own lives. My interest in FIRST is to learn more about inquiry-based education. Much of what I have done has been by trial and error on my own. Over the next several years, I will be developing a series of new inquiry-based programs here at the Station that teach ecological and integrated resource management principles. Additional knowledge and experiences in such methods would strengthen these programs.
