Action Plans At some point in time, you have been or will be involved in the preparation of short-term and long-term planning for your Field Station. I recently participated in a strategic planning process at Northern Arizona University. The parts of the strategic planning process that were most useful to me and my staff were the Environmental Scan, Strategies, and Assessment. Below are the frameworks we used for these components of the strategic plan. Please use these as a guide as your team develops the action plans for your Field Station in the context of the discussions at this institute. ENVIRONMENTAL SCAN: An analysis and evaluation of internal and external factors that will affect the Field Stations future. Examples: demographic changes, political action, economic changes, technological changes, changes in higher education, and policy directions. Environmental Scan Areas: 1. Demographic 2. Economic 3. Political and Governmental 4. Social and Cultural 5. Technology 6. Higher Education Basic questions for each of the above six areas: 1. What changes in ____ are expected to occur at your Field Station during the next five to ten years? 2. What impact do you expect these changes to make at your home institution? At your Field Station? On you educational mission? 3. What strategic opportunities or threats are created by these changes for your Field Station? Consider any current or anticipated trends or factors that are likely to affect the operation or goals of your Field Station. Describe them and analyze their potential impact. The Environmental Scan Areas are a place to start, but also consider any additional categories that might apply to your Field Station because of its unique characteristics. For each of the identified areas, use the basic three questions above to begin your analysis. Discuss what your Field Station will need to change or accomplish in order to successfully implement the goals of the FIRST project, as well as how those changes are related to your home institution as a whole. STRATEGIES/ASSESSMENT: Design the plan for achieving each of the 5 goals of the FIRST Project (please refer to Section 2). Strategies should be specific, measurable, aggressive/attainable, result-oriented, and time-bound. Be specific and consider that you will need to indicate assessment measures each goal. Next to each strategy, indicate what measure you will use to determine if your Field Station is meeting the stated goal. Make sure each measure is something that is possible and practical to determine in the future. FIRST Action Plan FIELD STATION_______________________________________________________ STRATEGIES/ASSESSMENT: Plan for achieving goals containing the detail of how objectives will be implemented to achieve the goals of this project. Strategies should be specific, measurable, aggressive/attainable, result-oriented, and time-bound.
