Europe-Based
Overseas Study Programs Coordinated by the University of Oregon
The University of Oregon, through its Office of International Education
and Exchange, offers numerous study abroad opportunities for Students
in nearly all disciplines in many different European countries. Some of
these opportunities are especially recommended for students in European
Studies, either because of special possibilities for interdisciplinary
work focused on Europe, or because of their integration with the European
Studies program at the University of Oregon, offering students special
academic and/or internship possibilities.
Aalborg University
Aalborg, Denmark
The European Cultural Studies program provides an opportunity to study
contemporary European issues in a highly interactive and interpersonal
learning environment, along with students and faculty from several different
areas of Europe. The program is thoroughly interdisciplinary. Like European
Studies at the University of Oregon, the program combines humanities and
social science approaches to the study of Europe. Courses are offered
in intercultural communication and media studies; nationalism, globalization,
and international relations; European integration and European Union studies;
political and economic regions; culture, identity and politics; and language,
linguistics and literature. Opportunities to study American and British
social history, international business and international development are
also provided. Most courses are offered in English; a few topical courses
are given in French, German, Spanish, and Danish, for students who have
the appropriate language ability.
A special feature of this program is the "group project," where
small groups of 4-7 students work closely with a project director and
each other on a specific topic which they collectively design and research,
each writing a component of the project paper or report. Another feature
is the presence of distinguished visitors from many different countries,
both European and non-European, who give lectures on a wide variety of
current international topics or who present short courses for interested
students.
Students may participate in this program on a Spring Semester (UO Winter-Spring
term) or year-long basis. Students who choose the year-long option are
eligible to apply for internships situated throughout Europe.

Europe and the Middle East are areas of special strength in this program.
Law, Finance, Communications and International Relations are the main
areas of study, and courses are offered in disciplines that include history,
political science, sociology, and economics.
Besides large lecture classes, classes ranging in size from 10 to 25 students
are common, with opportunity for discussion and individual and group projects.
Topics of small theme classes have included, most recently, European Union
relations with Eastern and Southern Europe, and Kosovo in the context
of NATO, UN and Russian perspectives (in the latter course students did
special projects and
presented their findings to the entire IEP program, which was recorded
on cassette).
The IEP program also provides opportunities for interaction with students
from diverse areas of Europe.
