Proposal for SBSE 2004 Retreat

Theme Category: Resources & Tools -- An Introduction to Building Simulation

Recent advances in building simulation have permitted students to assess design performance more rapidly than even before. Advances in graphic interfaces have eliminated the need for a user to learn a special command language. In addition, object oriented databases can now be created in a CAD environment, which can pass input data directly to the simulation program Ð thus greatly reducing the amount of data entry required by any application. These advances are now allowing sophisticated building simulation programs to be used early in the architectural design process and by the non-technically advanced students. Aware of these trends and the need for more educational material in this area, the U.S. Chapter of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA-USA) contacted a consultant to develop a series of PowerPoint presentations to introduce building simulation to the building design community. As an IBPSA-USA member, I recently reviewed this material and believe it would be very appropriate for use by SBSE members. Thus, I propose for my Theme Session to present this material and make it available to all attendees on a CD.

In addition, I will make available a building simulation application to be used in conjunction to the IBPSA-USA material. This application will reinforce the message of how graphic interfaces have made building simulation much easier to use. eQUEST which is perhaps the easiest to use of any to the DOE-2 interfaces, will be used to demonstrate that a novice to DOE-2 (perhaps someone from the audience), can input and run a fairly large building in less than 15 minutes. In addition, a CD that will include DOE-2 documentation, several tutorials, as well as a free version of eQUEST will be made available to all attendees.

I will be bring a laptop and all the CD material, but will need a projector.
