CNN/Nike World News Report (16 Feb, 2101)
(LONDON)
The Sex scandal involving the Prime Minister and six cabinet members broadened today with
the release of new video material reenacting the sexual positions assumed during the
alleged affair. This video will be played at 7 PM Greenwich Mean Time and will be
rebroadcast throughout the following weeks.
In other news, hostilities broke out along the border between the Russian Federation and
the Korean Province of the People's Republic. Neither Government could be reached for
comment.

Do you have difficulties with porous borders? Do other superpowers look at you with sympathy? Have you often found yourself wishing to just build a couple arsenals and stay at home? If so, we have the service for you! The United Mercenary League can practically eliminate pesky neighbors and border disputes. Enemy navies disappear without a trace. Air Forces find their ground control suddenly sabatoged.
All for a price often far less than it would cost your GNP to do yourself and -- as always -- strictly confidential.
Just one of our recent testimonials: "I always considered myself a second rate power. Others would always seem to colonize while I was still studying my maps. By the time I amassed my forces for an attack, other players would have allied and stabbed me before I could even write a support order. But after I engaged the UML, I've had a remarkable turn of fortune. A total of 12 SCs, complete control of the Pacific and still further growth potential. All this without explicitly betraying an ally!" -- Ahmed Koresh, former dictator of Kazakstan and frequent 'player' of Global Diplomacy.

CNN/Nike World Report (August 12, 2101):
Sherl Castell, our fashion correspondent in Northern Africa, reports that European Naval
Personel have taken to sporting sand-colored camo-chic fashion. "The effect is
casual, yet still fierce and manly. This season's shades of beige are a prompt reaction to
the excesses of blues and reds in the wardrobe everyone bought last year."

Supply center control end of Spring 2105
US: SUS ALA WUS MEX JAP CCA KAM KOR YAK CAM GRE NZE TAI PER CHI SCA Victory!
SA: ARG WAF MAD WAU QND EAF SAF SEA
GA: Eliminated Fall 2102
EU: GBR WEU SEU TUR EGY IND KAZ SAU RUS
RF: Eliminated Spring 2103
PR: Eliminated Fall 2103
GA: I was attacked right off the bat by EU and SA... nothing much I could do. General note to Len... your press is rather aggravating. It is much better to hear from someone that they are attacking you than to hear from someone that they are not attacking you when they evidently are.
RF: Good move wiping me out Andrea... I would have nuked you senseless.
Well, simple really. I discussed it with Eric early on but SA and EU should have gone nuclear WAY before they actually got around to doing it. I was completely ganged up on at the beginning, and I didn't have a chance. As RF, I had a chance, but I didn't trust Andrea as much as I should have. She appropriately wiped me out.
David (GA,RF)
When I found out I was China, and looked at the map, my first thought was "Look at that border with Russia". War with Russia seemed inevitable, and with all powers on top of each other it looked like it would be a disaster. Then I looked at the history of the previous game, and saw that Russia and China had indeed gone to war, and even though China had the early advantage both were eliminated quickly.
So I decided to try avoiding war with Russia at all costs, and the only way to do that seemed to be an alliance. I chose my starting builds to be as pro-Russia as possible, but to my dismay Russia chose anti-China builds. I proposed an alliance to Russia in my first message, but I guess I wasn't very persuasive, and Russia's response was plainly unconvincing. At that point I should have decided to fight Russia, as Europe was plainly soliciting it, but I chose to give Russia another chance. That was my big mistake. Europe chose Africa as his enemy, and Russia had a big jump on me.
From then on my position was basically hopeless. I tried to work with whoever would help me, and I'm pleased to have outlived Russia, but I never had any real hope.
Comments on the variant: This is a very exciting variant. I really like the effect of the air force units, and although we haven't seen nuclear units until now they add a very interesting twist. I also like the way all powers are neighbors of each other - makes for an explosive mix. My one problem with the variant is the proximity of Russia and China. They look like automatic enemies - I would bet they go to war 9 times out of 10. That makes them both very weak in a game as explosive as this one. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that there is no diplomacy before initial builds, and it is more than likely that at least one will choose builds hostile to the other. I think both powers would be strengthened by making Kor a neutral, and Ind an Asian home center.

I think it is also possible that strangers as RF/PR in a PBEM game are more likely to go to war than in FTF (where the game has mostly been tested with less of an automatic difficulty between RF/PR). The map changes are reasonable, but may strengthen both the PR and the RF too much. The next play-testing will use the same map, but allow inital (pre-initial build) diplomacy which will allow a greter chance of RF/PR co-operation -- as well as more efforts by the other players to discourage such threatening co-operation, etc.
I do not know what I am supposed to write, so I will do like tennis players do at the end of a tournament...
"Uhm... Uhm... (clearing my throat) Ladies and gentleman, I'd like to thank first of all my generous opponents, Mr. Len, Mr. Mike and all of the rest for a very nice game. Then of course, our good referee Mr. Eric for his time, and all of the sponsors, Coca Cola, CNN..."
OK, enough of that. Let's divide the game in three moments: the opening, the midgame and the end. Doesn't it look like chess? I will only talk about my point of view, leaving the rest to the other players. I found it very amusing that the players mistook me for a woman. In fact, Andrea is the Italian version of Andrew. I am a boy, 23, well, 24 tomorrow March 3rd.
In the opening phase, the decisive factor for me was clearly the alliance with SA that allowed me to grow without worrying about an aggresive neighbour. When the alliance deteriorated in the midgame, the key of the game IMHO was possibly the success I had in keeping SA and EU busy with each other, allowing me to destroy RF and PR. It was not easily done and I consider that the greatest accomplishment I had in the entire game.
In the end, after SA was dramatically nuked repeatedly, what allowed me to win was probably the distrust between EU and SA and a lot of luck. I was not expecting victory this turn. In fact, had EU and SA cooperated, they might have easily swept the largest part of Asia, so it came as a surprise. But this is even more satisfactory, because it means that my Diplomacy efforts were VERY effective. In fact, I only recall of losing two battles, in CHI and in EAR.
And about luck, well, Napoleon used to ask his generals: "Are you lucky?" and if the answers was no he usually continued with "If you are not lucky, we can't use you."
I was very happy to play with each of you and I'm sure that those who lost early in the game did so because of misfortune. I thank each of you and wish the very best to you and your families.

I thought I would give a set of comments about the tactics of the game as I saw them progressing. Since I needed to remain neutral, I could not speak them at the time, so many of these comments are months-suppressed! I have relatively little to say about the diplomacy strategies followed by the players. Note that many moves which I perceived as weaker tactically, proved to be diplomatically superior. The US especially made a number of moves (2102 especially) which did not take full tactical advantage of the map situation to the effect that the US remained relatively unthreatening to the powerful neighbors. As a result of these (in-)decisions (and correct tactical play when it was essential in 2104), the US won. There's a lesson in there somewhere...
Builds: Pretty straightforward. Suggested that an RF/PR allliance (read "Juggernaut") would be possible. These powers are always at risk of war because of the SC placement. Without that risk, they would make the most dangerous 2-way alliance on the map. Initial builds suggested that MAT was likely to become a hot spot quickly. US/EU would need to DMZ NAT or not expand effectively.
W01: GA/SA conflict already starting. Banging heads together for the next seasons. If EU hadn't attacked GA, SA would have remained a minor power. Main event was RF KAM-KOR. This started WWIII rather foolishly, I believe. Russia was in no position for a fatal stab and would need to hold through the Spring rather than take another SC from PR. UN SUS-MIW obviously reflecting good US/EU/SA relations -- a triad which we see continue for the next years.
Sp01: Standard CAM/MEX split between SA/US. SA and GA still "wasting moves", but the EU attack has begun, suggesting that GA would be at a distinct disadvantage with likely agreements between SA/US and EU/US at this point.
Su01: RF clearly has trust on the Western front which allows RF to focus units on devestating PR. Other powers' units hover to either help SA or partake of the carcass.
Fa01: Clearly RF's trust did not pay off. This is a typical problem for playing the RF. Feasting on the PR usually makes the RF vulnerable to second year attacks from the US and EU (which have typically expanded as far as they can without conflict at this point). The UN in MAT will prove of vital importance later. SA needs to insist that this space remain unoccupied.
W02: Nice use of UN POL for convoying UF to WSI. Both these spaces will prove vital in the later years.
Sp02: EN Sau-Nio allows GA to remain alive for another year. Three way power parity is established. Play should be highly positional at this point. Importance of well placed AFs and nuclear options should be considered. Spring would have been a fine time to "all hold" for EU as the units were well positioned to defend an arsenal. Later arsenal construction will prove riskier. At this point it is clear that the US is manuveuring against the EU.
Su02: The EU does not position for a defense against the US via NAT, which surprised me, but in the end it avoided war to not do so.
Fa02: A co-ordinated US/SA effort to attack the EU would have worked at this point. It probably would have led to an SA victory since the US units would have no longer threatened BRA and the SA units would be free to clean up in the Asian Pacific region. Apparently, the US saw this and hesitates for the next two seasons. This allows the US to think in terms of positioning units while SA/EU conflict develops.
W03: 3-way standoff stable. US facilating which appeared to have been the correct diplomatic strategy in this case.
Sp03: UF in EUS and UN in MAT are critical. Unclear whether the EU and SA realizes the nuclear threat this creates.
Su03: After these moves it is clear that the US is in a better position to attack SA. I would recommend (tactically only) getting an SN in AMP ASAP and at least DMZing MAT.
Fa03: The EU breaks the nuclear ice about a year too late. This can now serve as justification for the US to build later -- and the US has much better positioned air forces. Interesting to speculate what would have happened if the EU had remained non-nuclear. It would have been more difficult for the US to justify an arsenal build and might have led to a completely conventional warfare game, with a very uncertain outcome.
W04: Standard EU bombs NAT. Always seems like a good idea because of the SC vulnerability to that space. It creates terrible difficulty in moving west so this coupled with the lack of AFs in the west renders the ER in SCA not very threatening.
Sp04: Perfect arsenal build in SUS, since US still had control of MAT. Must be stopped immediately, and the EU and SA wait one season too long. Had SA built an AF in BRA, then EU/SA bombing of SUS (the probably arsenal build location) via SPN/EGY/EAF/SAF/BRA would have been possible in Summer. This would have required co-operation between SA/EU, but the motivation should have been clear and cutting the bombing with MAT-BRA would have been unlikely unless the US had reason to expect such a bombing.
Su04: Correct bombing target of MAT -- ensures virtual permanence of the arsenal. Meanwhile, SA and EU still battling one another despite the US's now superior position.
Fa04: Nice bombing of INO, but the UF EUS is the more obvious threat to the EU. QUE could then be taken out the next turn isolating the two arsenals from one another. Obviously appeasement of the US is part of the EU's strategy at this point. US needs 2 SCs for victory after this season. SA will clearly lose most if not all home territory, so SA needs to firm up an alliance with EU immediately, or a US victory is quite likely. SCA will clearly be US'. On the other hand, WSI can't be readily retaken and with all the AF units in North America it would be difficult for the US to fight SA in both South America and the Pacific.
W05: Nice elimination of EAR which was only possible by duping the US into thinking that it was harmless to delay taking SCA until the build season (Sp05). SA also played the defence of PER very well. I interpreted this as coupled with the attack on TAI as a way to ensure that SA would only lose PER (not also ARG) in the Sp and could then gain an unprotected JAP from the US in the Sp keeping the US at 15 SCs even with the inevitable capture of SCA. On this assumption that play would continue beyond Su05, SA needed to do something with the AF in PER. It could not serve to retreat into ARG to hold since it was unsupportable. Better to have it in PAR (or to convoy it somewhere else -- ANT at last?) where it could support an SN in ARG.
Sp05: SA correctly conceded PER and took AMP which would have been a serious threat to the US. However, by declining to take JAP, SA allowed the US to win. Had SA taken JAP and had the SA and EU united, victory in 2105 would have been very difficult for the US although a positional advantage remained especially since the EU could be either captured or eliminated through bombing.
Congratulations again to Andrea for leading the US to victory! The game was quite short (equivalent of 9 years of the standard game) for such a decisive victory against competent opponents -- especially since this variant has less predicatable end game positional play.
