ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES COMMITTEE
September 15, 1999
EMU Umpqua Room

ATTENDEES: Connie French, Karyn Kaplan, David Niles, Bev Murrow, Martha Ravits, Robyn Hathcock

New Business:
Bev raised a concern about work environment and finding the balance between printing out hard copies of electronic information verses reading everything off a computer screen. There is also the issue of good customer service when it comes to answering questions verses referring people directly to a web page.

Old Business:
Computers: Karyn volunteered to research and write procedures for recycling state owned and privately owned used computers for the web page. She is looking into mandating that new computers vendor contracts address recycling boxes and Styrofoam block packing materials. A list of how to handle other types of used state property will also be included.

Suggestion Box: Need to decide on a location in the EMU for the suggestion box and determine funding source for its purchase. Karyn will advertise the availability of an electronic suggestion box on the web page in the Daily Emerald.

Transportation: As a prelude to a transportation resource center, David would like to have a system for collecting information from parking permit applications. If we know where people are coming from, we can let them know about mass transit options and a car pool system can be developed. The Infographics Department is willing to help develop a system. The committee will need to review a written proposal.

There is talk about constructing a bike cage at the Health Center. David has suggested that it be constructed out of recycled bike parts. Resource Revival, a Portland based company, has submitted a bid to the Planning Department. David will provide the committee with these plans and asked for support on getting this approved.

Increase Student Involvement: Marti will get in touch with John Baldwin in PPPM and Karissa Ansell-Bell in Environmental Studies about contacting students. Karyn can arrange for them to receive 400 level independent research credits. Marti will review the committee charge as regards student involvement.
End Junk Communications Day: To be considered for recycling awareness week in November.

Sustainable Business Symposium Grant: Karyn will contact John Baldwin for more information on the grant application.
