Committee Charge and New Members
The Committee Charge can be found on the web page at http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~eic.
There are twelve current members and appointment letters will be going out to a staff member in Knight Library and another in the College of Business. Jennifer Levy, the ASUO University Affairs Coordinator, advised Mary that six students are going to be appointed in the first week of October. Jennifer also expressed interest in working to improve communication between students and committees.
Annual Report and History
Mary distributed a summary she prepared containing excerpts from the committee’s 1999-2000 annual report. The entire report is also available on the web page. There were three sub-committees last year: Education (ongoing), Green Building and Transportation. This year’s sub-committees will be determined at the next meeting and everyone can sign up for one or more.
Karyn talked a bit about the committee’s history in that it was designed by a group of students in 1989. She believes that it was one of the first campus environmental issues committees in the country. The students worked for three years and in 1991 the EIC was formed. It now serves as a model.
Old Business
Mary tried to contact Theresa Sabol Spezio regarding the status of last year’s environmental audit class. She was unable to reach her, and in following up will also check on feedback Theresa may have received from the student survey. She also plans to talk with Dan Williams, VP for Administration, regarding the status of other committee business from last year.
New Business
J.R. brought up a problem in Printing Services. He has received complaints from Business, Athletics, and Facilities Services that recycled paper is jamming and curling in printers and copiers. This may be due to higher heat levels generated by new machines often used to process a large volume of prints. Some of the issues are: Will this impact the recycled paper policy?; and how wide spread is the problem? Mary recommended that the full committee discuss this further at the next meeting.
