Sustainability Director, Steve Mital, chaired the meeting.

Chair Election

Steve asked for committee chair nominations.  Jim Blick nominated Chuck Kalnbach, and it was seconded.  The vote to elect Chuck was unanimous.  He will begin his term immediately following this meeting.

Climate Commitment and GHG Study

Copies of the American College & University President’s Climate Commitment were distributed.  In support of this climate challenge, Frances Dyke has asked Steve to develop an action plan that would help the university significantly reduce green house emissions.  She would like the EIC to provide assistance, feedback, and review the plan so that a set of policies would be ready to send to her office by the end of the academic year.

A portion of the OUS Green House Gas emission report conducted by Good Company, an independent research group, was distributed.  Specifically, pages 59 through 64, provides a snapshot of UO’s emissions status.  Steve will e-mail the full report to the committee.

Part of Steve’s job is to provide staffing support to the EIC in terms of research and/or arranging for experts to meet with the committee.

EIC List Serve, 2006-07 Annual Report, & Revised Charge

The committee discussed approving changes to the list serve, and it was agreed that only current EIC members would be on the list.  Jim suggested creating a second list serve for non-committee members or to add them to the environmental coordinators list.  The committee asked Steve to forward these e-mails to Karyn Kaplan.

There was concern about the status of recommendations submitted in the annual report.  Steve will relay this question to Frances Dyke and request feedback.

Changes were made to the charge at the conclusion of last year.  New committee members expressed a desire to discuss the charge in greater detail during the next meeting.

The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting will be held from 11:00 - Noon in the EMU Alsea Room on Wednesday, November 28, 2007.
