ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES COMMITTEE
MARCH 17, 1999
EMU Maple Room
ATTENDEES: Cyndi Jones, Kay Coots, Janet Rose, John Bittner, Robyn Hathcock, Connie
French, John Baldwin, Karyn Kaplan, Martha Ravits
Announcements:
Robyn is putting the committee charge and minutes on the web site, has changed the layout
and added frames and colors. She asked about establishing a logo. Kay suggested getting
the students in Fine Arts involved in designing one. Karyn asked Robyn to put out an
E-mail to the committee for more ideas and to remind everyone to check the web site. John
and Connie volunteered to work with Robyn on the logo. Karyn would like to see meeting
dates posted and a hot button to encourage students to get involved with the
EIC. The majority of E-mails which Robyn has received have been from campus
representatives who are interested in setting up a recycling program.
JR sent out decals on the recycled paper policy (to be posted on copy machines) to all the
environmental coordinators. Extra decals are available through Karyn.
Old Business:
Connie will contact the Emerald again. It may be possible to at least get a
"did you know" section in the paper.
Recap of accomplishments this year: environmental symposium, taking the paper policy
forward and distributing decals, the new web site, environmental citizen award.
New Business:
A professor from Shasta College has contacted Karyn about bringing a team of five faculty
to our campus for a tour, and meetings with VonNeet (Energy), JR Gaddis (Print Services),
Dave Niles (Bike Coordinator), the Environmental Health and Safety Office, and with
members of the EIC to discuss the environmental, etc. Kay and John expressed interest in
meeting with the Shasta visitors possibly during the H.O.P.E.S. conference.
Earth Week Update - Campus Recycling will set up tables and the Survival Center is
planning a full week of activities. There is a campus teleconference on greening college
campuses which Karyn is trying to set up in April.
River Front Research Park - the committee discussed keeping this issue alive and possibly
writing another letter to Dave Frohnmayer, specifically concerning no development north of
the tracks. John will provide the committee with a copy of the senate resolution and Kay
will get a copy of last years letter for review at the next meeting.
Environmental Implementation Policy - Kay will work with Robyn to get the policy on the
web page.
The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14 at
11:00am in the EMU Owyhee Room.
