Annual Report Review

The committee suggested adding an executive summary to link recommendations directly with the University’s Comprehensive Environmental Policy. The two main areas of focus are to encourage enforcement of existing policies and to take a leadership role in areas such as the Olympic trials, a smoke free campus, and transportation issues. To be discussed in the order in which they are found in the environmental policy.

Action Plan Suggestions

Olympic Trials: refer to letter to Frances Dyke in support of a promoting a sustainable event

Recycled Paper Policy: review the report that Harriet Merrick is preparing with a goal to require all departments purchase the default 50%, or a higher percentage, in recycled content paper

Sustainability Coordinator: recommend that the administration increase position to full time

Refillable Water Bottles: provide an opportunity for people to refill bottles by installing filtered water stations around campus (a good example can be seen at PARS)

CASL: continue support

Energy and Sustainability: take advantage of financial incentives offered by the state

Transportation: DPS, along with University Planning and Facilities Services, will be working on many of the parking and transportation issues. The committee would like to see items prioritized as follows: update Campus Transportation Plan, Heart of Campus, promote education and advertising, bike parking, parking areas, separate budget, living close to campus.

Environmental Tobacco Smoke: summarize issues and move the full report into an appendix Refer to new evidence found in the Stanford report and the committee’s smoking survey.

Green Dorm Room: the subcommittee will provide Jim with an update for the report

The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting TBA (Fall Term 2007).
