Good Company Presentation:
Joshua Skov is one of the founders of a local start-up business called Good Company. They are currently applying for a grant (from the Business Alliances office at OUS in Portland) to work with the U of O in order to create a set of indicators and standards for the social and environmental impact of universities. Their goal is to create a set of meaningful standards, as well as an auditing process. This would not simply be an environmental audit of the University; but would create an auditing process or "tool kit" that can be taken to any university.
Joshua asked that committee members who are interested in sharing their expertise provide their e-mail addresses. Good company is looking for help in areas such as creating the auditing process, building indicators, determining how the UO works and who are the best people to contact here. The grant would help them pay professors and interns on the research end. Joshua would like input on professors and students who might be interested in some role with the project. Good Company met with President Frohnmayer in December. He expressed interested and offered tentative support.
Environmental Audit Class:
Kari Heimerman and Teresa Sabol Spezio will be teaching an audit class in the spring. This course will focus on global warming, transportation and energy. They will speak in more detail at the February meeting.
Web Page Logo:
Geroge Beltran offered to help design the logo. Mary Clayton will forward his ideas to the subcommittee.
Reducing Energy Use on Campus:
Dan Williams asked the committee to help develop strategies to reduce energy consumption. George Hecht and Amy Lake presented background information and referred the committee to an article in News & Views, titled "PNW Energy Problems Chill UO Campus," January 19 issue.
Energy costs have increased from $11,500 per day last year to $14,000. Some reasons for this include: higher market prices, greater reliance on computer and peripheral equipment, additional 400,000 square feet of building space and a need for concerted effort by entire university community to conserve. Some ways to minimize wasted energy include:
