Subcommittees

Green Buildings Representatives of the Campus Planning Committee (CPC), Chris Ramey and Christine Thompson met with the subcommittee last week. Dan Williams has directed the CPC to make working with EIC a priority within certain constraints. The CPC’s subcommittee will be determining priorities and policies for mandating use of green concepts. These will become part of the long-range campus development plan thus ensuring that every project addresses green issues.

Last week’s meeting was very productive in discussion about standards and sustainability, coordinating with the basic fundamentals of the Environmental Policy in mind, and connecting with user groups. Karyn will step back from working directly on the subcommittee in order to continue work on demolition, construction and purchasing. She distributed copies of the Construction/Demolition Recycling Resource Guide which was sponsored by Campus Recycling.

Christine reported that the CPC’s subcommittee will have their first meeting in January to begin with an overview and discussion on what is a green building. She encouraged everyone to share examples of successful green building projects.
Chris recommended the Planning and Development section on the City of Eugene’s web site as an excellent resource. The Environmental Policy is a good resource and provides a summary of sustainable issues at UO.

Transportation
The Transportation Working Group Report from 1996 was reviewed. Each subcommittee member researched a different part of this report.

Bus routes/times (David) David will report on this at a future meeting. There was some discussion regarding the University’s contribution to LTD and whether this could subsidize additional routes.

Signs for bike routes (John) At this time new signs are being installed, thus it’s a good time to make improvements.

Car pooling (Bev) According to the report, car pooling exists and parking is offered from the kiosk to the post office on 13th Street. There seems to be a need for better signs and some form of car pool coordination.

Once priorities are determined, Rand Stamm, George Hecht, Chris Ramey and the new OPS director will be invited to a meeting. The subcommittee can do a presentation and find out what is being done or planned in these areas. The next subcommittee meeting will be on Wednesday, January 12 at 1:30 p.m. in EMU Century Room D.

The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting is Wednesday, January 26 at 9:00am in 196 Lawrence Hall
