ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES COMMITTEE
August 19, 1999
EMU Umpqua Room

ATTENDEES: Connie French, Robyn Hathcock, John Baldwin

Planning for 1999-2000
Attendance may continue to be low in the summer due to vacations etc. therefore these meeting will be primarily for planning and announcements.

Computer Recycling: Connie would like to see information added to the Web page on procedures for recycling used UO computers. It would also be beneficial to include information about what people can do with their own personal computers. This would be an ideal research project for a student.
Junk Communications: Need to have a campaign in the fall or winter to reduce junk mail and E-mail. Some of the ways to accomplish this would be to:
* Hold an ‘End Junk Communications Day’
* Set up a table in front of the bookstore to disseminate information

* Provide information on how to set up a system to reduce the junk mail
* Ask J.R. Gaddis to make junk mail return cards available again
* Provide information to the environmental coordinators
* Conduct a study of how one department reduces junk mail by profiling how
much comes in, what action is taken and then how much comes in later
* Connie will talk to the Computing Center Consulting Group for

recommendations on reducing junk E-mail

Old Business:
Karen contacted Dan Williams about the reappointment of members and concerns about improving attendance at the meetings. Dan replied that David Hubin said the problem is not unique to this committee. The Committee on Committees will discuss this further. Connie still plans to send a note asking whether appointees will be able to participate.
Dan also responded to the printer paper problem as it relates to use through student fees. He will look into solutions.
Robyn has added a suggestion section to the Web page and plans to do more work on a submission field click button. Connie asked if it’s possible to set it up so that a suggestion can be submitted without having to register their E-mail and browser.

Announcements:
Four conferences are planned for next year:
Sustainable Business Symposium
Coalition Against Environmental Racism
Environmental Law
H.O.P.E.S
There is an annual $5,000 grant being given for sustainable activities for implementing initiatives in the region. This will be in conjunction with the Sustainable Business Symposium. The first prize is $2,500, second $1,500 and third is $1,000. A local C.P.A. is donating the money because he is upset by the amount of paper and other waste he sees. Currently, he favors the city’s program to reduce junk mail.

The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15 at 11:00am in the EMU Umpqua Room.
