ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES COMMITTEE
April 14, 1999
EMU Owyhee Room

ATTENDEES: Robyn Hathcock, Bev Murrow, Connie French, John Bittner, Karyn Kaplan, Patty Krier, John Baldwin, David Niles

Announcements:
Karyn asked that each subcommittee give her a synopsis of their work for a final report to Dan Williams. She needs that by the May 19th meeting.
OPS is going to be acquiring new vehicles to replace their fleet and David Niles is looking into alternative fuel options. There are some new prototypes available which he hopes OPS might be interested in testing on campus. However, he was not sure whether they would go in this direction voluntarily.
Old Business:
The Emerald invited David to do one article which appeared in a special supplement they ran on fitness (more than one requires approval from their board). He will send a copy to Karyn.

Shasta College administrators will visit our campus on April 30. Activities have been set and anyone interested in the schedule should contact Karyn.

Environmental Symposium on April 20. Kay Coots will speak instead of Cyndi Jones. Dan Williams will give an introduction at the beginning. Chris Ramey cannot make it and will get a replacement. Karyn is handling the recycling section. As of today forty-three people are planning to attend; however, there may be a number of others who come but did not RSVP. Any handouts should be sent to Robyn electronically to be posted on the Web.

Environmental Citizen Award JR Gaddis nominated Cara Darling (Printing) and Terrie Penfold (Purchasing Support) as well as Mark Dixon (Printing). Kathy Hariman nominated the Knight Library for greatly reducing paper waste through charging a fee for computer printouts. The committee prefers to give the award to people over a department and discussed taking some action to support the library’s efforts to reduce paper waste. The tech fee, which allows students to make unlimited copies in the EMU computer labs, needs to be in sync with the recycled paper and campus environmental policies. Karyn suggested that this issue be part of the wrap up session in May. She will write Kathy a thank you note.

New Business:
Connie would like to get the monthly meetings listed in News & Views. The committee agreed that this is a great idea.

A teleconference on Greening the Campus will be held April 23 from 11 12:30 in Studio B at the IMC, Knight library.

Subcommittees:
Web Site: Robyn has posted a section with current events which will primarily list items that pass through the committee. John, Connie and Robyn worked on several options for the committee logo and presented color copies for review. Karyn felt it would be helpful to see these in gray scale. A globe with olive branches around it was the preferred image. A final decision can be made in the fall.

Topics to consider for the May meeting to wrap up the year:

1. Paper waste and other resource issues related to student tech fee
2. Recommendations
3. Ongoing projects
4. New directions
5. Improving student involvement on the committee
6. Final subcommittee reports
7. Summary, observations, future directions

The next Environmental Issues Committee meeting is scheduled for May 19 at 11:00am in the EMU Maple Room.
