THINGS INDIVIDUALS CAN DO
Section 4.4 Minimize Solid Waste Production
1. Utilize existing surplus equipment opportunities in ROSE and Surplus Furniture Exchange to minimize cost and waste generation.
2. Share existing resources with other departments. Sign up for "surplus exchange" electronic bulletin board through Susie Endow (susiee@oregon.uoregon.edu).
3. Set-up small office supply exchange in mail or copy room.
4. Purchase items made from recycled materials, start with paper.
5. Purchase what you are going to use.
6. Participate in existing campus waste reduction opportunities: reusable mugs, stop the junk mail campaign, use of email over paper, make double sided copies, limit postings, use route slips.
7. Participate in existing campus recycling program: recycle all office paper/books, contact Paper Recycling (X65275) in preparation for large file/office cleanouts, centralize deskside recycling (paper and beverage containers) to building sites, bring flattened cardboard to cardboard collection sites in loading dock areas. (Campus Recycling offers deskside paper recycling containers, contact X65275 to order one).
8. Use Vendor contracts to reduce packaging, specify recycling and waste reduction.
9. In academics, minimize paper use: use email, eliminate use of cover sheets for assignments, allow use of backside of paper for homework, utilize double-sided 100% unbleached recycled paper copies for all paper handouts.
The University of Oregon has a commitment to waste reduction and recycling. If you would like to add to your department recycling, please contact Campus Recycling 346-1529 and we would be happy to add recycling collection sites upon request. Additionally, if there is an odd item that you would like to try and recycle, contact us to see if there are any local markets available.
Please plan ahead and contact us when you will be doing a large cleanout. This will help us serve you better to get those materials out of your office.
THANX FOR REDUCING, REUSING and RECYCLING!!!
