I teach First Year Chinese this year. I have also taught Second through Fourth Year Chinese at UO, Indiana University (Bloomington), and UCLA. I enjoy teaching the beginners because laying the foundation is crucial and students can really see their own progress. Besides teaching the students, I also train and teach the graduate students before they go teach their drill classes.

I like to keep the classes lively, fun, interactive, and revelant to students' lives and interests, but in order to enjoy, everyone has to put in the efforts. What might make the Chinese program at UO different from other universities are that (1) I teach both Traditional and Simplified Characters and let the students choose which writing system they want to learn because I understand everyone has different reasons and goals for learning Chinese; (2) students start learning to write characters as soon as the second week of CHN101. Language is real and useful. I hope to give the students tools to go to China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or other Chinese-speaking countries to further their studies or pursue their dreams.
