In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without
form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of
God was moving over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be
light"; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and
God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the
darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
6
And God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and
let it separate the waters from the waters." 7 And God made the firmament
and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which
were above the firmament. And it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven.
And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.
9
And God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into
one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. 10 God called the
dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And
God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, "Let the earth put forth
vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is
their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth." And it was so. 12
The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own
kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its
kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was
morning, a third day.
14
And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to
separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and
for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens
to give light upon the earth." . . .
20
And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and
let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens." . . . 22 And God blessed them, saying, "Be
fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply
on the earth." 23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth
day.
24
And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their
kinds: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their
kinds." . . .
26
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let
them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and
over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that
creeps upon the earth." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the
image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God
blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill
the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over
the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the
earth." . . . 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it
was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.
2:1
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And
on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on
the seventh day from all his work which he had done. 3 So God blessed the
seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all his work which
he had done in creation. (RSV)
4
These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.
In
the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, 5 when no plant of
the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up --
for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man
to till the ground; 6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole
face of the ground -- 7 then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground,
and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living
being. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in
10
A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became
four rivers. . . 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden
to till it and keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying,
"You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but of the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it
you shall die."
18
Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I
will make him a helper fit for him." . . . 21 So the LORD God caused a
deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and
closed up its place with flesh; 22 and the rib which the LORD God had taken
from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man
said,
"This
at last is bone of my bones
and
flesh of my flesh;
she
shall be called Woman,
because
she was taken out of
24
Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and
they become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, and were
not ashamed.
3:1
Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the LORD God
had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, `You shall not eat of any tree
of the garden'?" 2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of
the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3 but God said, `You shall not eat of the
fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch
it, lest you die.'" 4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will
not die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and
you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 So when the woman saw that
the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the
tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she
also gave some to her husband, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened,
and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made
themselves aprons.
8
And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of
the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD
God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, and
said to him, "Where are you?" 10 And he said, "I heard the sound
of thee in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid
myself." 11 He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you
eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" 12 The man said,
"The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree,
and I ate." 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this
that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent beguiled me, and I
ate." 14 The LORD God said to the serpent,
"Because
you have done this,
cursed
are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals;
upon
your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.
15
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her
seed;
he
shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."
16
To the woman he said,
"I
will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth
children,
yet
your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you."
17
And to Adam he said,
"Because
you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree
of
which I commanded you, `You shall not eat of it,'
cursed
is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your
life;
18
thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants
of the field.
19
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
till
you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken;
you
are dust, and to dust you shall return."
20
The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and
clothed them.
22
Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing
good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of
life, and eat, and live for ever" -- 23 therefore the LORD God sent him
forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. 24
He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the
cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the
tree of life.
The
LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every
imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the
LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his
heart. 7 So the LORD said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from
the face of the ground, man and beast and creeping things and birds of the air,
for I am sorry that I have made them." 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes
of the LORD.
9
These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his
generation; Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and
Japheth.
11
Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with
violence. 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh
had corrupted their way upon the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, "I have
determined to make an end of all flesh; for the earth is filled with violence
through them; behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an
ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with
pitch. . . . 17 For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to
destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life from under heaven; everything
that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you;
and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons'
wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two
of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and
female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according
to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground according to its kind,
two of every sort shall come in to you, to keep them alive. 21 Also take with
you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up; and it shall serve as
food for you and for them." 22 Noah did this; he did all that God
commanded him. (RSV)

So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; . . . When they had come to the land

When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to
him, "I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. 2 And I will
make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly." 3
Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, 4 "Behold, my covenant
is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. 5 No longer
shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you
the father of a multitude of nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful;
and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you. 7 And I
will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you
throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and

And God said to Abraham, "As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and
your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is my
covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your descendants after
you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You shall be circumcised in
the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me
and you. 12 He that is eight days old among you shall be circumcised; every
male throughout your generations, whether born in your house, or bought with
your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring, 13 both he that is
born in your house and he that is bought with your money, shall be circumcised.
So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant. 14 Any uncircumcised
male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from
his people; he has broken my covenant."
15
And God said to Abraham, "As for Sar'ai your wife, you shall not call her
name Sar'ai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and moreover I
will give you a son by her; I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of
nations; kings of peoples shall come from her." 17 Then Abraham fell on
his face and laughed, and said to himself, "Shall a child be born to a man
who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a
child?" 18 And Abraham said to God, "O that Ish'mael might live in
thy sight!" 19 God said, "No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a
son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him
as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. (RSV)
The LORD visited Sarah
as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had promised. 2 And Sarah
conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had
spoken to him. 3 Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom
Sarah bore him, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was
eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old
when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 And Sarah said, "God has made
laughter for me; every one who hears will laugh over me." 7 And she said,
"Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would suckle children? Yet I
have borne him a son in his old age." (RSV)
After
these things God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he
said, "Here am I." 2 He said, "Take your son, your only son
Isaac, whom you love, and go to the

When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar
there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the
altar, upon the wood. 10 Then Abraham put forth his hand, and took the knife to
slay his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, and said,
"Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I." 12 He said,
"Do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him; for now I know
that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from
me." 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him
was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram,
and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called
the name of that place The LORD will provide; as it is said to this day,
"On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided."
15
And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16 and
said, "By myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this,
and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will indeed bless you, and
I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which
is on the seashore. And your descendants shall possess the gate of their
enemies, 18 and by your descendants shall all the nations of the earth bless
themselves, because you have obeyed my voice." 19 So Abraham returned to
his young men, and they arose and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham
dwelt at Beer-sheba. (RSV)
These are the
descendants of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham was the father of Isaac, 20 and
Isaac was forty years old when he took to wife Rebekah, the daughter of
Bethu'el the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean. 21 And
Isaac prayed to the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD
granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 The children struggled
together within her; and she said, "If it is thus, why do I live?" So
she went to inquire of the LORD. 23 And the LORD said to her,
"Two nations are in
your womb,
and two peoples, born of
you, shall be divided;
the one shall be
stronger than the other,
the elder shall serve
the younger." 24 When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold,
there were twins in her womb. 25 The first came forth red, all his body like a
hairy mantle; so they called his name Esau. 26 Afterward his brother came
forth, and his hand had taken hold of Esau's heel; so his name was called
Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.
27 When the boys grew
up, Esau was a skilful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man,
dwelling in tents. (RSV)

"Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will

8 Here you are, trusting in deceptive words to no avail. 9 Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known, 10 and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, "We are safe!"-only to go on doing all these abominations? . . . 13 And now, because you have done all these things, says the LORD, and when I spoke to you persistently, you did not listen, and when I called you, you did not answer, 14 therefore I will do to the house that is called by my name, in which you trust, and to the place that I gave to you and to your ancestors, just what I did to Shiloh. 15 And I will cast you out of my sight, just as I cast out all your kinsfolk, all the offspring of Ephraim. In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, in fulfillment of the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD stirred up the spirit of King Cyrus of Persia so that he sent a herald throughout all his kingdom and also declared in a written edict: 23 "Thus says King Cyrus of Persia: The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may the LORD his God be with him! Let him go up." (RSV)
