In 2005, Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy launched the Sustainable Business Initiative (SBI) to identify, establish, and support mechanisms to assist private businesses, non-profits, and other organizations in Eugene to gain competitive advantage and create jobs in the emerging field of sustainable business practices and products.
Faculty and graduate student interns with Resource Innovations, a sustainability research and technical assistance program in the Institute for a Sustainable Environment at the University of Oregon staffed the SBI.
