idiss: notes from 2/27/04
Dear Team:
Finally, here are some notes from our 2/27 meeting. Please fill in the gaps
as needed.
Kellie Ann, thanks for providing your excellent list of IMG services, which
is pasted below so the rest of the group can see it. (Plain text, since I'm
not sure what would happen to the Word file in the listserv archive).
Thanks,
ARB

Integration of Digital and Instructional Support Services (IDISS)
Meeting Number Two 2/27/04
10 - 11:30 am West Conference Room
In attendance: Colleen Bell, Andrew Bonamici, Sara Brownmiller, Carol
Hixson, Lesli Larson
In this meeting, we focused on methods & strategies for conducting an
initial inventory of media, educational technology, and instructional
support services offered by the Libraries. Considering the broad range of
activities, their dispersion through the organization, and the challenge of
finding standard terms/descriptors, we decided to start by in-person,
on-site interviews of department heads and key staff. Questions/topics to
cover include:
----
draft questions:
SERVICES:
What services do you offer that in areas of media, educational technology,
digital library development, instructional support services? These are
broad categories, so it might help to think about:
- services you offer to the university community that are not done at a
service desk
- services you offer at a service desk that provide direct support for
faculty
For each service describe:
- who provides the service
- who uses the service
- what fees are charged, if any?
Are fees charged to all users?
Are fees charged for all services?
Are there other fees that should be charged?
Are there fees that should not be charged? ]
What is the typical level of activity (scope, quantities, etc.)?
Is the activity cyclical or does it remain steady throughout the year?
Where do you see demand decreasing or increasing?
What services have you been asked to provide that you currently don't offer?
FORMS & COMMUNICATION:
Provide samples of forms, policies, brochures, price lists, esp. as offered
to public
Provide URLs of web pages with info about the services
EQUIPMENT:
Describe the equipment currently owned & used to provide the service.
Describe equipment desired to enhance/improve service
----
For the first interview, the entire task force will meet with Tom Stave &
key Document Center staff. Questions will be sent ahead of time. The Doc
Ctr will be a good test case because of the wide variety of services
offered. After that, we will refine the questions a needed and conduct the
remaining interviews in pairs.
Next meeting March 12, with Kathy Heerema

Interactive Media Group [IMG]
Services Overview

Kellie Ann Garsed-Donnelly - General Manager
February 23, 2004
Overview
The University of Oregon Interactive Media Group (IMG), formed from the
original New Media Center and now part of UO Libraries' Media Services,
develops a range of full-service technology design and consulting solutions
for faculty research and instructional use. Our cross-disciplinary team
designs and develops new media projects for interactive courseware and
consults with faculty members on the instructional use of creative technology.
Scope of Services
The IMG develops mid- to large-scale projects requiring more than 40 hours
of labor to complete. Merit is not a criterion in project acceptance; the
IMG takes on all projects that can be accommodated within a given term's
time frame. Projects are booked a minimum of one term in advance to allow
efficient gathering of resources and scheduling of team members.
The approach and focus of the Interactive Media Group complement the
service offerings of the two other Library technology groups: the FITT
Center and the Imaging Services Center (ISC). Both groups focus on
small-scale projects, and both groups accept walk-in clientele. Both groups
also will perform production work as part of a larger project (i.e.
scanning slides for a digital photography project, or assisting a faculty
member in digitizing video), as opposed to the IMG's agency approach of
developing full projects - from requirements gathering and initial
consultation, through full design, development, and deployment.
The IMG's service offerings include the following:
Web Design + Development
The Interactive Media Group envisions, develops, and deploys web-based
projects for a variety of instructional, research, and presentation
initiatives. Our team works with professors, programs and departments in
the turnkey development of web projects, including requirements and scope
development, user interface and graphic design, technology programming and
production, user testing, and project deployment - as well as providing
expertise in specific service areas when needed.
Applicable Skills & Technologies:
· Requirements gathering and client consultation
· User-centered interface design
· HTML/DHTML
· Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
· JavaScript
· Macromedia Flash
· ActionScript programming
· Web application development: PHP, perl
· Database development: mySQL
Multimedia Development
The Interactive Media Group designs and produces online and CD-ROM-based
interactive titles for teaching, instructional support, and information
dissemination. User interface and graphic design, digital video,
professional audio, and animation combine with multimedia programming to
create intuitive, engaging environments for learning, research,
examination, and presentation. Combining the rich media power of multimedia
with the connectivity of the Internet allows us to build "wired" CD-ROMs
that can dynamically draw content from the web or share test results with
remote servers.
Applicable Skills & Technologies:
· Requirements gathering and client consultation
· User-centered interface design
· Macromedia Flash
· ActionScript programming
· Macromedia Director
· Lingo programming
· Digital video
· Digital audio
· 3D visualization
Design and Technology Consulting
The Interactive Media Group assists faculty, programs, and departments in
choosing, designing, and developing creative technology solutions and
projects. Our experience in managing large-scale web and multimedia
deployments across multiple teams makes us the perfect partner when
planning and envisioning such projects. We can provide advice on
appropriate hardware and software technologies; project management
approaches; best practices for design, production, and testing.
Faculty Training
The Interactive Media Group provides specific training to faculty clients
within the scope of an accepted project - for example, training a faculty
member and GTF in the use of a web-based content editing and management
system developed for an interactive class website. This is in contrast to
the Library's FITT Center, which regularly trains faculty on the use of
technology applications (i.e. PowerPoint, Blackboard, digital video capture).
