Center for the Advancement of Sustainable LivingA Proposal for the University of Oregon |
|
What is CASL? |
Environmental concerns as well as economic hardships are making people keenly aware of the need to develop new ways to live in a more resource and energy efficient manner. Several universities and colleges are recognizing the inherent role they play in the innovation of sustainable solutions to these societal concerns. As a leader in the sustainability movement, we propose that the University of Oregon expand its role by creating a facility to research and promote sustainable living practices on a residential scale. By doing so, the UO would be empowering citizens, engendering civic responsibility, and providing a service and renewed sense of hope to the university body as well as the community at large. Mission Statement: The mission of the Center for the Advancement of Sustainable Living (CASL) is to demonstrate ecologically and socially sustainable technologies and living practices in a residential setting, to provide hands-on experiential learning opportunities for the University of Oregon and surrounding communities, to collect and disseminate information about such technologies and practices, and to facilitate original research in this field. CASL is dedicated to challenging the notion that living lightly is difficult or burdensome. |
