Situation 1: There are some new students who will be entering your department at your university next term. They are from Korea, Malaysia and Italy. They need some advice from a student who has been in the department for a while and they wan to know some of the difficulties they may encounter during their first term. Your advisor has asked you to call one of them and give him/her a few words of advice about being a student in your department.

However, no one is home when you call. Leave a short message with a few words of advice and offer to let the student contact you for more advice.

Situation 2: Respond to the following advertisement. Pick out the item (or items) you might like to buy and call the seller. She, however, is not in so you will have to leave a message. C. AEIS 105 : Group Cassette Assignment

The third and final recorded assignment is a taped group discussion. This assignment will allow you to integrate all of the discussion skills you have been practicing over the course of the term: presenting information, commenting on information, asking questions, interrupting, and giving feedback. You will have to get together with other students outside of class to record a 15- to 20-minute group discussion of the topic.

Assignment:

On __________________, bring in a short newspaper or magazine story. In class, each student will present his/her article to a small group (3-4 students in each group). After the discussion, the group will decide which article they believe would make the best discussion topic. Then you will switch groups and repeat the process one or two more times

After you have presented your article, you will choose partners to be in your group (each group should have 3-4 participants), and one article for the recorded discussion. Next, set up a time to get together outside of class to record the discussion of the topic. DO NOT READ FROM A SCRIPT!!!

A tape of the discussion is due on ________________________________, along with a copy of the newspaper/magazine article. Remember to write the names of all the participants written on. Grades are based on individual and group performance.
