1932 EARL MACK
ALL-STAR
BARNSTORMING TOUR

The Earl Mack All Star tour of 1932 consisted of 17 games with the majority played in Canada. The team didn't lose a game- not a surprise given that at the time these were some of the best players in the world. Some members played with another all star team against the Brooklyn Bushwicks before heading out west. They met with the rest of the team in Chicago at the 3rd game of the World Series between the Cubs and the Yankees- known for Babe Ruth's "called shot" home run- and from there went by train to Sioux Fall S.D. to begin the tour in earnest. It was at the forth game of the tour in Devil's Lake, N.D. that my ball was signed. All total they traveled over 4700 miles, mostly by train in their private Pullman coach, but they did charter a plane to fly from Winnipeg to Fargo and back again. Many of the players were interested in hunting both during and after the tour and considering Prohibition in the U.S. wasn't repealed until April, 1933 I'm sure there were libations along the way as well!

Using the resources at the University of Oregon's Knight Library I was able to request microfilm of the newspapers from the various towns the All Stars played in. In most cases I was able to get complete box scores and write-ups of each game and with that information I generated the statistics below. As you can see the All Stars dominated hitting .348 compared to their opponent's .187 avarage. All Star pitching didn't fair too badly either with a team earned run average of 1.77! As there were 3 games that I wasn't able to get complete box scores for the tour totals are incomplete. If you go to the Player's web page you will see the individual stats are slightly different than the team stats shown here because I employed information from the write-ups on the three games that didn't have box scores.
