Math 682 WINTER 2008, Algebraic Groups
- Instructor Jon Brundan
- Office Hours for Winter 2008: M 15:00-16:00, Fenton 219
or stop by any time... if I'm in I'll answer questions!
- Class meets MWF 11:00-12:00, Deady 206.
- Books: I'll continue to teach quite closely from the book "Linear algebraic groups"
by T. A. Springer. But you might find it better to get hold of
a copy of "Linear algebraic groups" by J. E. Humphreys. Most people find the latter book easier to read independently, and it covers basically the same stuff. It is not necessary to get either -- I will provide rough notes at the end of each chapter of everything we've done in class. But you know its best to see the material more than once so getting hold of and making an effort to follow the material in one of these two books in parallel with the material from class is a good idea.
- The main topics this term: quotients then some elements of the structure theory of reductive algebraic groups.
- I will set exercises as we go and collect them in occasionally (probably twice).
-
THERE WON'T BE ANY EXAMS THIS TERM.
-
Note I will be away on 16 and 18 January and on 4 and 6 February.
My plan is to give two additional *optional* one hour lectures on "Representations of algebraic groups" in the last week of January to make up for these four missed classes. I will fix up a time later on... maybe 4pm Thursday Jan 31 and Friday Feb 1 but this will likely change.
- Grading: Attendance: 80%,
Homework 20%.
- I will try to keep this page updated with my class notes (PDF) as we go.
