Math 392 FALL 2008, Abstract Algebra

• Class meets MWF 1:00-2:00, Deady 301.
• Book: Abstract Algebra, Beachy and Blair, Waveland Press.
• Syllabus: This term I'll first review in a more abstract way the stuff we did last term (!) then cover chapters 5 and 9, then we'll do some parts of chapter 6. You should finally get to see some nice theorems this term!!! Don't forget the mantra of learning mathematics: Repetition is the key...
• Homework Assignments (30%) to be collected on WEDNESDAYS like last term. Late homework will not be accepted. Not all of the assigned homework problems will be graded.
• I WILL BE AWAY on Jan 16 and 18 then again on Feb 4 and 6. Someone else will teach those classes (Feb 4 will be a review/homework question session and then Feb 6 is the first midterm anyway).
• Test dates:
  • Midterm I (10%): 1.00-2.00 W Feb 6, Deady 301.
  • Midterm II (20%): 1.00-2.00 W Feb 27, Deady 301.
  • Final (40%): 15:15--17:05 U Mar 18, Deady 301.
  You must bring photo ID to the midterms and the final.
• Grading: Homework 30%, midterms 30%, final 40%.
• Please remember that if you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what happened in that class. You can usually pick up any handouts from this web page.
